Flash for Mamiya M645 Super

I am aware, M645 Super will not do TTL metering. I'm curious as to what type of flash folks use for M645 (other than Pro-TL owners who can do TTL).

I am looking at Sunpak handle mount 544. Any opinions or experience on this model?

By the way, my main use for now will be to take portrait. But I have no idea what future use will hold.

I use Vivitar 283 and 285 both on camera and off camera.
They cheap and easy to find.

I always liked the Metz 45 series.

I use Cactus KF 36 . It is powerful enough to do fill-in flash at the 1/60 sync speed with non leaf-shutter lenses.

I got more than one flash I could use including a 285hv, but the whole side mounted hotshoe is rather awkward and shopping for brackets has been harder than I thought it'd be.

I got more than one flash I could use including a 285hv, but the whole side mounted hotshoe is rather awkward and shopping for brackets has been harder than I thought it'd be.

I wouldn't use the side hotshoe to mount a flash, because it would put too much strain on the side of the camera. It (the hotshoe) would be useful with something like the removable sensor for Vivitar 283s.

When I use a shoe mount flash (Vivitar 4900 or Olympus T32 or T20) I use the Mamiya GL401 left side grip with the appropriate terminal adapter. It has both an additional electronic shutter release and a hot shoe for flash.

If you decide on the GL401, be careful that you get the right terminal adapter for your camera, because the 645 Pro takes a different one than the Super requires - they are different shapes.

I'll also use my Super with a Metz 60 series flash, using the basic Metz bracket.

A bracket like this might also work - I haven't tried this, but it does permit placing the flash directly above the lens:

I use 544, and 622 models, but mainly a custom Lumedyne flash system with large battery, and a 400ws controller. The Sunpaks are auto-thyrister models, and will estimate the power needed based on the distance it reads from the subject.

With Lumedyne, it's completely manual setup, with bare-bulb flash head. I love it. But have been at this almost 40 years.......no problems with manual settings, or understanding the principals of light.

I use a Sunpak 522 and 544 on my mamiya M645. Seems to work ok on auto if i get the setting on the flash right.
