Hello,

I have a Canon EOS 650 and a Holga 120N. I know that both have a hotshoe, but was wondering if I bought a flash for my 650, could I use it for my Holga as well? What would be a good flash for the 650? And I like those color effects created with the colorsplash flash from Lomo, but refuse to pay the lomo price for it. Is there a way to get a similar effect without buying 2 different flashes? I heard of gel things, but don't know where to find them...

Also, is the light meter in the EOS 650 any good?

Thanks!

You could get a cheapy Vivitar flash that would fit in both hot shoes but why pass up on the performance of a dedicated flash for the EOS like what SunPak offers, among others. I understand versatility but don't sell yourself short. As to the EOS light meter, it's only as good as your ability to realize what it is telling you and to adjust according to your vision. Functionally it's a great meter for what it is.

I don't know why not. Santa brought me a Holga, and just for fun I put the Canon EX550 flash from my 35 mm rig on the hot shoe and it fired. You should be able to buy gels at lots of places. I bought some sheets of Rosco gels for split grade printing from Calumet. Since you don't need big sheets, some small gel lens filters would work as well.

I had an old Olympus flash (T 20) that was lying around doing nothing. I put this little guy in the hotshoe of my Holga and it fires happily.
Cost me nothing
Waiting for the result though, the film is still in the camera.

I'd like to see those.

I do want to get something for the EOS 650, but a Holga is a Holga...do I really need to buy 2 flashes? Plus, I can't spend $300+ for a flash.

I've been shooting with an EOS 650 for many years, the light meter never failed me. As for a flash, the 430EZ would be a very good flash at a reasonable price, dunno where to get one though.
