I have a new F80 and I'm just getting familiar with it. The built in flash has its place but I would like to have a good flash unit to go with it that will cover some distance.

Can anyone offer some recommendations please?

Thanks

You can't go wrong with the dedicated Nikon SB units. The flash recycle is quick, and the TTL is great. Back when I used Nikon Cameras, I originally bought a sunpack and a vivitar flash, they were junk. The SB28 blew them away.

For mine I bought a Metz flashgun with dedicated shoe. The good thing about the Metz system is that with another shoe you can put it on most other cameras.

John,

I don't have any direct experience of this, but a good place to ask around would be www.nikonians.org

Have a look at the existing threads first; several questions like this have been asked in the past.

Hope this helps,

Frank

I agree with Brian...I use the SB28 as well and it is really nice.

I use both SB20 and SB28 on my F80's and they are great. Expensive initially but worth it in the long run. As someone previously mentioned the TTL metering is exceptional even for fill in etc.

I use the SB28 on my F80 (and F100). As many people buy but rarely use a flash you can pick up a mint second-hand one at a very reasonable price.

Get a Sigma EF 500 Super. I have the old 430 Super on mine and it is a GREAT flash. And they are all set for the D and G metering and have all the bells and whistles one could want. At B&H it is $179.00 NEW. (note - the DG model is just for digicams...). It is rated at 132'/40m at 50mm. So it is well matched to the SB28.

And like I said, it is cheap and sturdy. My old 430 is still chugging along after being generally abused for a couple of years.
