Anyone has experience with it? I'm having trouble accessing the LCD in the first place.

The circular 4-way controller seems to be permanently attached to the back plastic plate that covers the LCD and is preventing from lifting it off. Anyone know how to proceed?

I know it's been 10 years, but google brought me here so it's only fair for me to post the solution. The D-Pad has a metal decor plate that has been glued to it very tightly. Underneath it is the plastic bit that is screwed into the rear display panel. All you need is a tiny flathead and a knife to pry the two halves apart.

There is a tiny slot you can put your screwdriver in on the bottom:

Prying is difficult, it needs a lot of force but you shouldn't put too much strain on the plastic, use two sharp prying tools at the same time.

That's it!
