In the past, I have hired agents to represent my work. I was living in a large metropolitan area, and paid commission to an agent who worked to get my work in front of galleries and private collectors. This worked out fairly well for me, resulting in several solo exhibitions and a fair amount of sales. I was happy to pay the comission.

About 6 years ago, I moved to Raleigh/Durham NC. I did some research on the local gallery scene and had a solo exhibition in a large Durham gallery within the first six months. It was a good start, but it was a lot of sales work. Not the kind of thing I'm very interested in. I made an initial effort to find representation, but when it came to nothing, I just let it slide. I was in the process of building a house, photo studio, and darkroom, so I had different priorities. Fiver years later, I have most of the photo toys I want, and work on my Art at my own pace. I have a website, and a web blog that generate some interest, but few sales. I know its because I am less than enthusiastic about the marketing aspects of my photography. I would really like like to find someone who can do some networking and marketing for me. I have no problem paying for a good rep. Any information or direction would be appreciated.

It might help generate more/better input if you state what efforts you did make to find a rep.

Did you inquire at the galleries for reps known to them?

Place an ad (specific for this) in the paper or other print?

Ask other local artists (whatever media) who they use or recommend?

Basically, I canvased the internet for representation. I spoke with several reps but found that most were focused on representing artists in other mediums, mainly painting and illustration. I also researched the local art community. There was a co-op in the Raleigh area. Didn't really find much there either. When I first relocated , I rented studio space from a local commercial photographer. He was helpful in getting me in touch with people, but these were mainly commercial professionals. I am more interested in Fine Art galleries and art collectors. In addition, my work is almost all figure. I have found that this can place some limitations on marketability just because of the subject matter.

I had a substantial solo show at what still is the largest gallery in Durham, I did speak with the curator, but nothing really came of it. This is probably my fault. As I said, I'm not much for doing my own campaigning. Ultimately, (best case scenario) I would like to find a resource where I could review potential reps. This may not be realistic, but I thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone had any idea where a resource like this might exist.

Sounds like you've been pretty thorough. Why not advertise to get someone young, fresh and all bubbly (a total virgin to the trade)?...train them to be your rep.

Seems like you'd have nothing to lose in trying.

Good luck...

Don, why not use the same person, then? Or at least hit the metro areas? No reason to stay local. It's weird. I've never heard of agents like that in the fine arts field.
