Hi

Have this nice 180mm lens chrome (NOT the Super) for a Mamiya C330
and I thought the filter size was 49mm as per the manual but my step-up
ring 49-52 doesn't fit...
The nice FAQ at Dead Link Removed
says that some models have a chrome guard on the threads and for sure my lens has
a chrome ring. Do I have to remove it to use my step-up ring?

thanks

Yes, you do have to remove the chrome ring. (Counterclockwise) Be careful not to use too much force. These alloys(?) are soft.

If they are soft, then a large rubber stopper might be in order.

Yes, remove the chrome rings and the 49mm will fit. I have a whole box of those chrome rings... I actually thought that perhaps I would put them all back on and shoot with the lenses in their "native" mode, since that is the way they were designed... then I decided that was dumb and put the rings all back in the box and hid the box... Sometimes I just get carried away...

You probably should leave them on the viewing lens, as you never know if you're going to need to swap elements in the future. It would be a shame if you'd mangled the filter ring before then.(far too easy to do, *sigh*)

Thanks folks!

Sorry for the late reply, spent the day in a darkroom

I'm a bit miffled, as I can take the chrome ring off the viewing lens but
the one on the taking refuses to obliges...I used all I could think was 'safe'
including a runner band but the darn thing simply refuses to yield...sigh.

Again, thanks!

There's probably a very slight distortion in the lens thread, or maybe a little dirt in there. If you have one of those jar lid removing mats, try putting that on a flat work surface, standing the lens on that (with the other lens over hanging the edge), and twisting the whole assembly around the lens axis. That should give you even pressure around the ring. Don't drop it, mind.

It is possible to warm the alloy of the lens barrel a little with your hand, but there is so little mass involved it is hard to get enough differential expansion to loosen the thread.
