ive only just heard of tinting as im relatively new to shooting film and developing. ive done a little research and from what i can tell most tinting is done during the printing stage, but it is possible to tint the film as you process it? i only ask as i develop at home but as yet i dont print.

There would be no benefits to tinting a negative film, but lantern slides which were glass positives were sometimes handed tinted for projection, however 35mm B&W slides would be bear impossible to hand tint, however they could easily be toned.

Dear wilfbiffherb,

Welcome to the dark side. Good news! There is no reason to tone film. Properly processed your b&w negatives will last for far longer than you need. As a general rule, toning film will not help you print and in any case will not affect the color of a print. There are staining developers where the stain does affect printing and is used to good advantage. Here is a place to start looking into staining developers: http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/PCat/pcat.html
