Our fall Harvest Jazz & Blues event is beginning on Friday night.I'll be using my Nikon F3HP & fast 50mm 1.8 to shoot outdoors under available light (street lamps, interior lighting,etc.).Nothing inside as film cameras are not allowed.
There are lots of film to choose from in my arsenal (Kodak 3200,Tri-X) plus some 1600 Fuji color.
Recommendations please.

Getting an interesting picture of a festival is a tall order in my opinion, especially when the ratio of attendees to performers is high. If I think back at all the photos I've really liked that had a lot of people in them, almost all of them have been with the camera in a superior, usually higher, position. A picture of a crowd at eye level, or of a performer on a stage above the camera position just doesn’t do it for most people. If your intended subject matter is really the festival, and not individual people that just happen to be there, I would think less about film and more about finding of a way to get a superior position from which to capture your intended subjects. Scouting the venue in advance might help.

Great idea Denis.
I worked security for 5 years and know the area well.
Once they've set up the venues I do a recon.

Mike, see if you can get on security detail. That would help the event as well as give you access to some very nice vantage points. You didn't say where your event is located in Canada, but I was in Montreal for a Jazz Festival in the 80's and found it to be one of the best such event I have ever been to.

Good luck and post a few pictures.

Fredericton ,N.B is the location.

I've seen some great stuff from years ago when all you had to do was "Ask nice".
Things have changed. No "FILM" cameras inside the venue.Probably lots of digi phone things and the digital photog for the organizers.
A shame really. My friend took a wonderful shot: Smokey, sax player highlighted in a spot light,a couple slow dancing.Beauty.
