Film no longer processed (at Wegman's markets)

I think the biggest issue is that no professionals use 1 hour labs, and consumer demand is tanking rather rapidly. The last time I went to CVS they handily pull processed my film.

And they do 120 as well, same conditions.

Oh Ok. The Castlereagh St outlet I mentioned takes them to the Pitt St lab (that you mentioned). They do a good job and pretty decent rates and turnaround times too.

Will it come to the point that anyone wanting a color print from a negative or slide have to do it at home in a home darkroom?

I think so, but it won't be for a while. Sure, the number of printers has decreased but many of these were consumer labs. But i still believe that there are enough film shooters out there to ensure that some labs (pro-labs in particular) stay around. They just might be harder to find and we will have to send film away to be processed and/or printed.

We have it lucky here in Utah. I've never been keen on the drugstore/bigbox processing myself. I go through a lot of work, and have a personal investment in my snaps, and I like to think that the person handling my E-6 and C-41 feels the same way. To me it's worth the little extra chump change. In Salt Lake there are some very good pro labs. I use a lab called Nichols. Same day/next day (depending on when you drop off) E-6 up to and including 4x5. They will even do 8x10 E-6, and also hand developing of black and white, black and white optical printing on RC or fiber, etc. as well as the full range of normal color and lambda stuff. I have no hesitation in recommending them. They do a fair amount of out of work for out of state clients. I believe APUG sponsor Elevator offers all these services as well, and also Ilfochrome. If you've never seen a good Ciba/Ilfochrome from a nice slide you have no idea what you are missing.

Elevator can be found on the APUG sponsor page. I think these are the kind of labs we should be supporting. I don't believe Wallyworld et al gives a crap except to make money on idiots and slave labor.

Photo Express in San Jose (7th st at E Santa Clara- near San Jose State) does an excellent job on C41 and E6- even 120. They use an 1-hour machine (Agfa?) for the C41. Not quite a pro lab but Calypso moved over the hill and Newlab is up in the city. Don't know if they do the E6 in house or send it out, but it is ready in a couple days which is fast enough for me.

It used to be that many dealers here in Rochester would send film to Praus (an APUG sponsor), if you requested high quality professional results. They will no longer do that. You have to go to Praus in person.

I had a roll of color film from a family outing and took it to Walgreen's in Saint Paul, MN. The service was very good, the prints very nice. The technician told me they're still getting a lot of film processing business, esp. from older folks. I am glad the situation is not as bleak as one might think.

we have a few drug stores that process film still, not my 110 though,
there is a (mini / photo ) lab nearby that does very good work, great work as a matter of fact.
once in a blue moon i can afford to take my 35mm to her though ...

like eddie we use sams .. ours doesn't have a minilab but sends out to fuji.
e-6, b/w chromobw all goes out to dwaynes ( 110, 8mm, 16mm, 120 + 35mm ) and regular c41
(35mm ) is done at fuji .. 2 day service. i ask them to do all my xp2 inhouse
because i like the yellowish red hue they print it with.
i can't complain, i have given them maybe 200+ rolls and not had any problems and it is inexpensive.
we have 2 pro labs in my area, for me one is 25-30mins away the other is maybe 40.
.... the BIG one ( ABAR ) closed down about a year ago and the building is for sale.

down here on the cape, where photographers are on every block, the ones using film can just go to Cape Cod Photo & Art in Orleans...and they do color (35mm and 120) processing and machine printing. From what I can tell, they're not going anywhere, although I think they were bought out earlier this year but the new owners are still busy doing this work. There are several other professional processing/printing labs still around if you want to pay a bit more. B&W I will sometimes do myself or go to Providence to get done

I don't think 1-hr labs closing down is necessarily entirely a bad thing ...

I use 35mm C41 for certain tasks, and a local Ritz takes care of me very well. Quick process, print, and a CD of jpgs to boot. I don't expect them to be a pro lab, but they don't expect me to pay pro lab prices either. The service is very fast. They are great to deal with. I do understand lots of 1 hr labs are ugggy - but not all.

Target opened a new store near me 6 months ago, (Tempe Marketplace) with all new equipment, good results at a good price, I hope they dont shut down. The Walmart near me is still processing.

I have an excellent pro lab 1/2 mile from my house. They charge $6 for dip 'n dunk processing. My film is always spotless - no dust or scratches ever.

Photo Engineer you should check with Rowe Photo, as I once ran their photo lab on Mt Hope. They have moved it up to Greece but I bet all their stores are linked with couriers.

They have a whole room devoted to "hi fi" now and HDTV at the one on Mt. Hope (or wherever it is in Henrietta now). The one on Ridge Road in Greece is near the big mall here and is handy to me, but they have nothing I'm interested in in any way. Hahn is the only bet. I'll probably be over there tomorrow.

P E well I have been out of Rochester for a few years. Rowe was doing stuff up at the Greece store last time Mr Rowe gave me a tour, but I didn't know they tossed all the film stuff. My old lab in the Mt Hope store is now a sound room with TV's and surround sound.

The Costco in Brampton ON does a great job for me. They still process a decent amount of film, though less than before. They'll print stuff I just want to experiment with, b+w or colour. They are very helpful and enthusiastic if you have something special that you're trying to do. Just FYI

I spent over 30 years coming and going as a customer in the store and wandering around the showroom outside of your den. I bought little there as the clerks were less than helpful compared to Jerry Hahn and his staff, so I bought mainly at Hahn's. I did buy a lot of odds and ends at the "fire" sale though but didn't realize it meant they were getting out of analog. It wasn't until my next trip over there that I saw that corner was totally bare of analog stuff. Only digital.

When they still had analog stuff, I tried to buy a new Nikon body and they grudgingly showed me a new 8008 body and some used stuff. I went to Jerry's and they showed me the 8008, 4004, 2020, and several used bodies and compared the merits of all models. I finally bought the 2020.

Of course, much the same took place at RIT. I shopped at the campus connection on and off but the analog stuff vanished between May and September. They really knew their stuff there too and were very helpful.
