the only reason too shoot with film

1. a non standard aspect ratio. 8mm fun time kids..

2. most major studios use film as a means to create the appearance that a film project, say schindlers list or the last bond, is more "serious" or "critical" due to simply being on film.

3. mystique

1. Non standard aspect ratio is 1.33:1? That was standard for almost 100 years. And you can crop in post…
2. “Schindler’s List” was made before digital was mature enough to be a viable image acquisition medium for theatrical distribution. I don’t think the audience cares about what medium the pictures are recorded on.
3. Mystique? Digital acquisition and distribution (to theaters) has only been dominant for a decade or so. Maybe I am too old to see the mystique, though the infrastructure of shooting and exhibition of actual film based work is at least 95% gone.

schindlers list was 1993, star wars phantom menace was 1999 when it came out as digital only..

To my eyes, digital movies look very different than movies made w/ film. It's technically impossible to get the same results, what people get is "good enough". Well, it sure wouldn't have been good enough for directors like Stanley Kubrick, who once made an entire movie using only natural light outdoors and candle light indoors. You could never have made that movie w/ digital capture.

A lot of it has to do w/ the medium itself, but the cost and time involved in making a movie w/ film automatically means you will get better directors, better cinematographers, etc. You don't screw around w/ that kind of money.

Time and convenience are big deals w/ movies today, not image quality. My son works in the movie industry and does a lot of the special effect work. He mentioned that to shoot a burning car you need a permit from the local authorities, a fire truck standing by, law enforcement and extra security to keep people away, extra insurance, etc. To avoid all that, they do it digitally now.
