To my eyes, digital movies look very different than movies made w/ film. It's technically impossible to get the same results, what people get is "good enough". Well, it sure wouldn't have been good enough for directors like Stanley Kubrick, who once made an entire movie using only natural light outdoors and candle light indoors. You could never have made that movie w/ digital capture.
A lot of it has to do w/ the medium itself, but the cost and time involved in making a movie w/ film automatically means you will get better directors, better cinematographers, etc. You don't screw around w/ that kind of money.
Time and convenience are big deals w/ movies today, not image quality. My son works in the movie industry and does a lot of the special effect work. He mentioned that to shoot a burning car you need a permit from the local authorities, a fire truck standing by, law enforcement and extra security to keep people away, extra insurance, etc. To avoid all that, they do it digitally now.
