Never seen them before, but for the price they seem very likely to work fine. All they need is to be the size of a plate outside and the right thickness -- and a good black coating helps.

Hello,
Inserts were common at the beginning of the XXth century.
It avoided replacing at the time usual plate holders with film holders.
Here are some in different dimensions (cm).

Some plate holders have "tabs" (there might be a better word for it) in the bottom corners that the plate/film should be pressed against. It's like that with the Voigtländer plate holders, and I suspect you have those since you have an Avus camera. If you have a Dremel you could cut off a little bit of the folded parts of the film adapters so they will work correctly.

If you find Agfa/Orwo ones you can use them without any modification.

A warning: There are plate holders with a built-in pressure plate and a hinged frame so you can use both plates and sheet film in them, like these (posted by mskovacs on photo.net) https://d1ro734fq21xhf.cloudfront.net/attachments/00C3ap-23264184.jpg I have tried Kodak branded and unmarked ones, and they all had the problem that the bottom, where the hinge is, is a little bit farther back than the upper part, so the focus will be uneven. The difference is only around 0,2-0,4 mm, but the depth of focus at the film plane is very shallow. The only way to make the focus parallel to the film plane would be to shim the latch that holds the frame in place, but then you would also need to shim the groundglass. So these combined plate/film holders are a waste of money.

Most of the time they are called 'film sheats' ; sometimes you can buy a pile used ones for a low price...
I'm (still) looking for some whole plate sheats (6,5 x 8,5 inch)....

Yes, Kodak and some other companies from English speaking countries called them 'Film Sheaths', in Germany companies like Agfa and Orwo called them 'Filmhalter'. But when you search for them on places like eBay, try different searchwords as well, like 'film adapters' or 'film inserts'. They can also be hidden under the keyword 'film holders' as they can be called that, even though that usually means holders/cassettes that are used with film only and not adapters. The German word 'Filmhalter' may be automatically translated into 'film holder(s)' on eBay.

Do a search like this on eBay, and tick the box "Include description": (film sheaths, filmsheaths, film adapter, filmadapter, film inserts, filminserts, filmhalter) and you have included most of the possible searchwords. The parentheses and commas ensure that the site will search for all off those individual searchwords. Some sellers don't mention the size, so you'll have to look at the pictures or ask the seller.

Great info, thanks!
