Now that there, is what we call a Buzz Kill...

I just wanted to be the first person in recent memory to whine about a possible situation of over demand and under supply of photographic film in the marketplace.

Wouldn't THAT be a kick-in-the-butt reversal?

With new rhumors of Fuji killing another US imported E6 line of film, (Velvia100) I'm wondering how far along Ferrania is?

There are?

Ugh. I'm not a huge Velvia fan as it's just too contrasty for my tastes, but when I do want it, it's mostly in flat lighting which also tends to be dim and 100 is a lot more useful to me than 50. I KNOW the 50 is somewhat "better" in the classic Velvia sense, but that extra stop is sure useful.

OTOH, Provia and the less expensive Precisa version of it is proving to be a pretty good film for me. I've got to find someone with better scans than Dwayne's that doesn't cost much more though, or buy myself a film scanner. I got back the worst scans ever even from Dwayne's from my Mardi Gras in New Orleans slides and thought something was wrong with the film. Popped them on a light box - nope, film looks gorgeous. Scans are crap even by Dwayne's standards.

Dwayne's is great at making prints and developing film, but HORRIBLE at scanning.... I figured by now they might have fixed that (since my complaint in January 2011 I refused 50 scanned rolls of Kodachrome that were all horrible... but apparently have not gotten better...

Yes it would. By the way, I love the pun, (reversal, as in reversal film) whether it was intended or not.

It was...

Absolutely didn't think anyone would catch that.

I did, but let it slide.

OK, I have to admit I didn't- I'm sure you would have seen the mounting transparency of that lie.

Once upon a time, Konica produced film. Konica produced 750nm IR film, in 135 and 120, once a year. I had to wait for it, and then snap it up when it came. I used it, and then I waited for the next batch to become available. It was the only 120 IR film available.

Kodak E6 is gone. Perhaps Fujifilm E6 is going. This would simply mean that Ferrania would have a solid lock on E6. The company would stay afloat, because none of the other manufacturers could make E6 profitably. There is probably enough 120 market to support shipping a master roll of E6 to, say, Ilford to cut and package.

However, for a MF/LF person like me, I might never use the Ferrania E6. I started with MF, and only used 135 because of Kodak HIE. I'll send them a note and see what they say.

I'm guessing that the chems are the "cheap" part of E6. Freestyle shows Arista and Tetenal kits. The real difficulty is in the initial film product. If E6 is dropped as a product world-wide, then I'm sure that the kits would be sure to follow in rapid order. A freezer full of E6 means that it isn't being used, and has no need of immediate development. If Ferrania becomes the sole supplier, then E6 chemical developer production would continue.

I'm not sure it's safe to assume that since Fuji and Kodak couldn't make money on E6 film, Ferrania would be able to find the market profitable. It may just be that more likely the E6 market no longer exists at a sustainable level.

Well again profit depends on the cost of the machining etc, kodak has a much bigger amount of machines and building costs and so do Fuji... Film Ferrania will have a smaller machine, smaller building costs etc. And probably fewer greedy overpayed management demanding unearned over bloated salaries that suck up all the profit...

EK was too big for that market, even when they were still a film company. That market was too small for EK, even when they were still a film company. And now EK is no longer even a film company, save for one final major contract, soon to expire.

So yes (my tongue-in-cheek posts above notwithstanding), we are all wishing Ferrania well.

And no, I don't think Ferrania would have undertaken the not-insubstantial risks involved with their target E-6 product if they didn't think they had already successfully defined, and could populate, the required market/manufacturing sweet spot.

Whether, in fact, they actually can do that remains to be seen. But we do wish them well. They are the last, best hope. Or maybe the second to the last, best...

How could you possibly know this?

Kodak has not shown an operating profit in years (or decades now).

Click here for an excellent progress overview article gleaned from a personal visit by the author to the Film Ferrania facilities only about 2+ months ago. It's a well-illustrated article.

These Ferrania guys don't appear to be goofing around. They look like they mean business...

Blech, Kodak. Corporate idiocy at it's highest level.. They did nothing right based on their pompous belief that they were supreme.

Not showing an operating profit, doesn't mean the company isn't actually profiting, or that the executives aren't making some serious bank...

If the executives took a pay cut, the company could probably show a profit, but having a loss can actually help them make money by writing off the losses, it's all a game...

The executives still get paid, and well...

I would like some more direct updates from Italy letting us know how they are doing. I want to send them some money ASAP. When will that be?
