Now that there, is what we call a Buzz Kill...
I just wanted to be the first person in recent memory to whine about a possible situation of over demand and under supply of photographic film in the marketplace.
Wouldn't THAT be a kick-in-the-butt reversal?
Ken
With new rhumors of Fuji killing another US imported E6 line of film, (Velvia100) I'm wondering how far along Ferrania is?
There are?
Ugh. I'm not a huge Velvia fan as it's just too contrasty for my tastes, but when I do want it, it's mostly in flat lighting which also tends to be dim and 100 is a lot more useful to me than 50. I KNOW the 50 is somewhat "better" in the classic Velvia sense, but that extra stop is sure useful.
OTOH, Provia and the less expensive Precisa version of it is proving to be a pretty good film for me. I've got to find someone with better scans than Dwayne's that doesn't cost much more though, or buy myself a film scanner. I got back the worst scans ever even from Dwayne's from my Mardi Gras in New Orleans slides and thought something was wrong with the film. Popped them on a light box - nope, film looks gorgeous. Scans are crap even by Dwayne's standards.

Yes it would. By the way, I love the pun, (reversal, as in reversal film) whether it was intended or not.
It was...
Absolutely didn't think anyone would catch that.
Ken
I did, but let it slide.
OK, I have to admit I didn't- I'm sure you would have seen the mounting transparency of that lie.

Wanna' know what would be da' sheeeets?
If Film Ferrania really was successful in bringing a re-engineered E-6 transparency film back to the market, and it turned out to be a wonderful film.
And Kodak E-6 was already tanked. Then Fuji E-6 also tanked. Then mainline E-6 was only available from the new Ferrania.
This would simply mean that Ferrania would have a solid lock on E6. The company would stay afloat, because none of the other manufacturers could make E6 profitably.
I'm guessing that the chems are the "cheap" part of E6. Freestyle shows Arista and Tetenal kits. The real difficulty is in the initial film product. If E6 is dropped as a product world-wide, then I'm sure that the kits would be sure to follow in rapid order. A freezer full of E6 means that it isn't being used, and has no need of immediate development. If Ferrania becomes the sole supplier, then E6 chemical developer production would continue.
I'm not sure it's safe to assume that since Fuji and Kodak couldn't make money on E6 film, Ferrania would be able to find the market profitable. It may just be that more likely the E6 market no longer exists at a sustainable level.
How could you possibly know this?Film Ferrania will have a smaller machine, smaller building costs etc.
Kodak has not shown an operating profit in years (or decades now). And probably fewer greedy overpayed management demanding unearned over bloated salaries that suck up all the profit...

You are the Master, I am merely the unworthy Grasshopper...
