"Offhand, I can't think of a single post here or elsewhere from anybody who prefers "generic" SS reels to Hewes SS reels. Kindermans get mentioned as being good, too, but in a Hewes-vs.-generic survey, I expect that the Hewes would win with 100% of the vote, or very close to it."

Guess I'm the only one left. I rarely ever shoot 35 anymore, but when I did, I avoided the more expensive reels. I worked for several labs using wing/lynch and dip and dunk processors. We had hundreds of reels. They were all standard steel reels. The purchasing guys would have shot us if we ordered the overpriced stuff. Once you learn how to load a steel reel, you don't forget. I load 120 reels all the time without any overpriced gadgetry.

Okay, I got a couple of syringes. (Mom got them from her lab.) They measure up to 10ml. They say "Single Use". Can I reuse them if I'm only using them for measuring developer?
I've used one repeatedly for more than five years. Just remember, as with everything, to rinse it out thoroughly with water.

The "single use" warning is for sanitation. (That's one of the ways AIDS has spread -- by IV drug users who share needles, passing the virus along with their drugs.) This problem doesn't exist for measuring developers, although if you don't wash the syringe, you'd contaminate each solution with bits of the previous one, so you do need to wash it between uses.

Some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that my photography teacher gave me an enlarger, some trays, and some print tongs. I just had to spend a bunch of money for the rest of the stuff. (I didn't realize that a print timer was $80.)

The bad news is that the fedex guy came but didn't have my darkroom stuff. I guess it will be arriving Monday.

This may be too late, but used timers on eBay can be had for much less than that. Perusing completed listings, I see that most darkroom timers are selling for $10-$60 (plus shipping), although some are outside that range. I got a used timer with my first enlarger. It was simple, but it worked just fine.
