Film cameramen

One of the all tome greats is just showing here on Satellite TV, as soon as I spotted Peter Fonda & Phil Spector I knew that I was in for a treat seeing Laslo Kovacs superb camerawork again.

It isn't often film cameramen (or women) get the acclaim they sometimes deserve. But Laslo Kovacs work is superb, appearing effortless and magical.

Kovacs perseverance and brilliance rescued the day capturing a breath-taking performance by Muddy Waters in 1976, at the Band's farewell concert, released later as the Last Waltz.

Even when shooting stills we are influenced by what we see on TV or in the Cinema, sometime it's good to take note of those good influences.

I really enjoyed his old exploitation-era work. He really had a flair that set his work apart from the crowd. Thank goodness for Something Weird Video.

I recently watched Tarkovsky's Offret, filmed by Sven Nykvist. Beautiful, engaging film. I need to see Fannie and Alexander..
Also Fellini's 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita, Bella Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies..

The only cameraman that I can recall (sadly) is Mr. Nykvist. Makes me wish I was into cinematograph sometimes, it's so beautiful.

Do your soul a favor and get Antonioni's L' Avventura. It's like falling in love for the first time.

My favorite was Conrad Hall. Every time I watch "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", it puts me in awe. He also won 3 Academy Awards ("Butch", "American Beauty", and "Road to Perdition")...amazing DP.

I know you true film lovers are going to scoff. BUt as important a jump forward in vision and technology came at the hands of George Lucas. He captivated millions and rewrote film motion picture photography for the next twenty years. Certainly not the first to employ stop motion (SMis older than Bosayia'a beloved Sinbad) however he was able to make new technologies flow so, at the time, seamlessly. And Ben Burtt with his analog reel to reel sounding for an entire galaxy. Such talent has been brought to bear over the years and I love to see such talent explode in a single work so as to cause civilization to scramble for a touch of reality because they had viewed a slice of perfection.
