Here's a (not very serious) suggestion: if you're going to leave a camera in your car, leave in plain view on the passenger seat -- but leave a very clear yard sale price tag on it, marked "$1.25". Now imaging the conversation between a couple low-lifes.

"Hey, Eddie, this one's got a camera in it."
"C'mon, Pops, look at it. Buck na quarter. What the heck is a 'Leeka' anyway? Some sorta junker they got at a yard sale, that's what. Probly only takes 512 meg memory cards, half a dozen megapixels. Not worth breakin' the winda."
 
I have storage pockets in the car's trunk/hatch area which aren't visible to anyone who isn't in the trunk/hatch area. They are perfect for a small first aid kit and a Trip 35 in a small bag.
And I don't drive around with anyone in the trunk!

Your are kind of an Oly OM2 guy.....aren't you.?
Just wondering if you use the 35 as much as the OM or is is just that the 35 kind of makes a good "Camera Car".?

My Trip 35 doesn't get used enough.
It mostly fills in when I don't have a camera with me, and an opportunity comes up.
It is probably more accurate to call me an OM guy - I'm currently down to only four of those (OM-G, OM-2s, OM-2n and OM-4).
But I was out today with my Retina IIIc.
And we won't talk about my newfangled Canon EOS film bodies ...
As I said, I need to use the Trip 35 more. This is from it - one of the few I have digitized:

When my eyesight gets worse and i can no longer ignore it..... i might look into the EOS Cameras. From what little browsing i have done, they seem to be a great value for Auto Focus 35mm film bodies.

My EOS Elan 7NE with kit zoom lens cost my wife $25 CDN on Craigslist.
And the eye controlled auto-focus actually works for me!
The 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens is a treat.

Good Grief...... i paid more than that for every 35mm SLR i ever bought. :smile:

Keeping a tripod and little essentials in the car makes a heck of a lot of sense. I've done this on and off over the years.
Living in the US Midwest it can move 35-40°C in 24 hours. I treat film like perishable food, and my cameras like the instruments that they are.

I have a Retina IIC. That's a darn fine camera. I got it from a good friend who was closing his shop, it's been CLA'ed in the last couple years. Nice coated Xenar f2.0

A really nice camera, but most likely it is a Xenon f/2.
But I wouldn't leave it in my car!
 
In car you can easily keep SLR with you. For example Minolta Dynax 500si with some kit lens. Cheap as hell and you cannot blame the equipment ..

I keep Pentax PC35AF in my backpack. However it has sticky shutter sometimes and found out it is scratching film too :sad:
 
I have a not entirely happy little Agfa Optima Sensor 535 that I keep in my coat pocket at all times with a roll of cheap black and white in it. Small enough that you can forget you even have it there and cost me less than a roll of colour film on ebay.

If someone is inclined to be breaking into cars they'll do it for any value. A few cars later, they have enough for a hit of their favorite illegal addiction. My car was broken into once and the perps took my CDs from the center console and loose coins out of the ash tray. They totally ignored the Nikon 300mm lens in it's wrap sitting on the passenger side floor. I would not expect that luck again.. If it's out of sight, it's probably safe from quick crimes of opportunity. If you have a convertible or cloth top, someone would ruin that for thousands of dollars just for a few bucks of goods left conspicuous.
 
That's why it wasn't a very serious suggestion.

Another thing to consider is whether you really want to live/work in a place where simply parking your car on the wrong block is likely to cost you a soft top or a window (or the wheels).

Personally, I drive a five year old no-frills Fiesta, and I leave it full of trash. Not much temptation for anyone who isn't several hours into withdrawals, anyway -- and never mind the $300 ham rig, and fairly often (when I'm at the grocery store on the way home from work) tablet and camera bag on the front seat.

Yes, there are so many samples of cheap bodies and lenses around, maybe already battered. I call them beach cameras. Good for occasions were damage or total loss have to be taken into account. Otherwise: put that camera stuff into the trunk or under the seat.
 
This one is in remarkably good condition, not quite pristine, but not battered, llens to is in very good condition, barely a mark on it, we have a camera repair man over here and he often gets hold of these £300GBP, so for the price of both of these it was well worth the money, it is just the camera and 28 to 210 lens is easier to carry around as a workhorse in the car
 
I have a Pronea S and two IX-Nikkors in my car. Why I don't know.
