If you were allowed to keep one vintage Nikkor prime lens, what would it be…?

For Nikon F mount, I would say 85mm f1.4 AF-D. Works beautifully on every F and D (and Z with adapter) ever made. 28mm f1.4 AF-D is right in there as well. 50mm 1.4 is fabulous 2. 😊

Not really practical but I have an old 400mm f2.8 AF-I. First Nikkors with a motor in the lens, before AF S. Heaviest AF lens Nikon ever made. Works great on D bodies, so fast it's amazing. With 1.4X teleconverter equals a 550mm f4 great for pictures of my cats 😁

Nikon f/3.5 15mm AI-S Manual Focus Lens {Rear Bayonet Filter} with a 110 degree wide FOV and the Nikon 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye-NIKKOR AIS Manual Focus Lens {Rear Bayonet Filter} and I have one complete set of Rear Bayonet Filters and as second set only missing the Yellow filter. Anyone have the Yellow filter that they would like to sell to me? The rest of my Nikon lenses are AF lenses.

I love the 105 Nikkor-P, and the 35 O.C. They both have a really nice look to them.
But my personal favorite is the old 55/1.2. My copy just makes beautiful images.

55mm f/3.5 AI Micro Nikkor, closely followed by the 50mm f/2 AI (which I think retains the same formula as the pre-AI, but I may be wrong).

I'm seconding the 45/2.8 GN (mine's an early one with 9 aperture blades). I actually left it mounted on my F2 (with the plain DE-1 prism) for over a decade. The lightest/smallest F2 kit.

A few times during those years, I did take it off and used the (vintage 1966) 105/2.5, which is of course, my number two. (Yes, it's a much better, much more important Nikkor than the GN. I've always loved it and have used it a lot, though I'm generally more of a wide angle than long lens guy.)

Recently, when I began using my parents' old Nikkor lenses (which had just sat in cabinets and gadget bags for many years) again on the F2 and Nikkormat, I quickly gravitated to the (vintage 1972) 35/2. That's my number three.

Others I sometimes enjoy shooting with these days are the (1968) 28/3.5 and (1961) 13.5cm/3.5. But the 45 GN, 105, and 35 are definitely my favorites.

The non-ai 50mm f2. I’m sure I am not alone in that

I have both, the pre AI and the AI 50mm Nikkor F/2. Both very sharp…!

I use the Nikkor 35mm f/2 O.C. and find it not as sharp as the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-s or the Nikkor 50mm f/2 AI but has a very nice vintage look…!

Also the Nikon f/2.8 28mm PC lens, all manual, no AF and it can correct the perspective of a building that appears to lean back.

My oldest and favorite Nikkor is my 50mm f/2 pre-AI. Mine is the "K" version that has been converted to AI. I prefer this version to the earlier versions as its minimum focus distance is 0.45m rather than 0.60m.

Ok, I'll state mine since nobody said it. The Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 Ai-s ED-IF. I saw one go in fine condition recently for around 500.00 and for that optic its astounding.

Nikon 2 you may want to have that 35mm O.C. in for an inspection; my copy is quite close in performance to both the 28 and 50. This version of the 35mm f/2 has a 'more delicate' build near the front set of elements and it may need a little 're-torquing' to bring it up to spec.
