Favorite Publication

I subscribe to Photolife, partly because I want to support a Canadian photo magazine, but mostly because I find the articles useful and because it's not too oriented to gear. I really like the British B+W, and the British Practical Photography (although it's gone pretty much completely digital now). I have to travel quite a distance to find the British mags as the aren't available in the city I live in. In fact, most of the quality magazines referred to in this thread are only easily available via subscription. The vendors in my town seem to be obsessed with Pop Photo and the like.

I'm sure my reply to this thread will invoke rage and anger,but. We all know of the shrinking choices out there in anything "Film" orientation as far as magizines go. And everything else for that matter. Now for the rage part. I am a "Born Again Christian". I have been for many a year. Every time a pick up one of the shrinking number of magazines I am inundated with NUDES. I do not wish to see this. Therefore, my growing number of intersting magizines grows even smaller every time I go to buy one. Because I dont want this in my house, I dont subcribe for fear of what the next issue will hold. If I want to see, what I proseeve as "Filth" I would pick up Play Toy. Why is this considerd art and why does this always have to be thrown at the public in general. B&W(England) does seem to hold this to a very bare minimum and for that I thank them.

no rage and anger - just sadness. That there are still sections of the Christian faith that perceive nude= bad (aka filth). Now yes, surely there is much that can be demeaning and exploitative. But the nude human form in and of itself (nor the appreciation of such) isn't inherently sinful

Remember original sin is not so much biblical "fact" as a later theological (i.e. man-made) doctrine or theory. Original Blessing might be much more appropriate and something woefully forgotten.

In the biblical account God created man and women sans cloths and "...saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good"

"And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed".

P.S. I can't remember the last time my favorite photo publication - Blindspot - had nudes in it...

(my beef with the nudes in most of these B&W mags is they are usually just so badly done and cliched and the same old same old - nude in abandoned building, nude on a rock, nude in a forest glade - no different than a 1000 others before and all poor copies of a Weston or a Bernhard or such...!)

SilverShotz Vol 3 Edition 6

Just received in the mail SilverShotz Ed #6; and it has some beautiful images as well as some great articles including an Intro to Platinum Printing by Tilman Crane & Art of Bromoil Printing about Joy Goldkind. The editor seems to come down on the side of traditional photography; and, except for a couple of ads & brief review of digital enlarger, didn't see any mention of digital.

I am completely unfamiliar with Silvershotz. I can't imagine why I've never seen it at Border's or Barnes and Noble. Is it usually carried by those stores? Now I'm eager to take a look.

I recently discovered the Italian (bilingual) B&W mag PRIVATE which is pretty swell. I see that Jim Johnson also recently discovered the same issue, and liked it for different reasons -- a good sign in my book! I subscribed, anyway.

I always dislike review-driven mags, they are just veiled advertising IMO. It's sad (but understandable in SOME ways) that mags that purport to be about photography itself -- say American Photo, PDN, Camera Arts -- feel pressured to also include this sort of material. *sigh*

I get a lot of mags, and subscribe because it's cheaper than buying them (and sometimes easier than finding them):

Lenswork (paper and DVD)
PRIVATE
National Geographic
Camera Arts
Photo Techniques
PDN (online and paper)
B&W
Focus
Black and White Photography
Modern Painters (okay, tangential)
eight aka ei8ht or foto8
Hamburger Eyes (no more subscriptions! )

with intermittent bookstore forays into PhotoLife or (shh) Digital Photo Pro, the French PHOTO (usually the context issues), PICTURE, and -- when I can find it -- the Japanese COMMERCIAL PHOTO.

I'm sad to hear that Natural Glow is gone! I always purchased the current issue whenever visiting Japan (can't ever seem to find it here).

My new favorite magazine is New Zealand Magazine (nzmag.com)!!. It is the only magazine I receive by subscription. It isn't a photography magazine ... but, that is OK.
