I've been seeing the word "Liminal" in constant use lately, but I'm having difficulty understanding its meaning. Please explain.

"Liminal" means at or near a boundary, edge, threshold, or transition. Its etymology is similar to "limit" (and to "lintel" like a doorframe, for that matter).

Almost all panoramic pictures at the exhibition were taken along Vancouver waterfront, in that thin "boundary" between land and ocean, and that was reason why that word was used.
