I was surfing around for film and other supplies and found this at Freestyle Photographic. It is listed as Ilford Pan 100. I checked the Ilford website with no dice. Is this probably older than the hills?
Here is the link to the page.

And if it isn't older than dirt, is it a good film that just doesn't get any press?

Ilford Pan 100 is available, but in a lot of markets it isn't around.

I have seen it advertised on the web in places and I have seen the actual film in my own darkroom.

There are many films that are manufactured that are not well known, this is one of them.

I think it's an old emulsion, possibly like FP4 as opposed to FP4+ I don't know anything other than that.

Mick.

It's supposed to be FP4plus packaged for exporting to India (and other third-world countries, like Greece*).

It is said that they cut Pan 100 out of the FP4 Master Rolls, but from the edges of the roll (the quality is lower than in the middle) and so they won't label it FP4. I would think it wiser for Ilford to sell the stuff to some company that will rebrand it with their logo (like Maco, or Adox).

Once again, I repeat that this info is not cross-checked, so if I am wrong please correct me, Simon.

*In fact, it's not really Ilford's fault that Pan 100 and Pan 400 came to Greece, it's the importer's lack of professionalism that caused the problem.

I've seen it around as well, but guessed it was an entirely different film from an earlier era. As always, best thing you can do is give it a go I suppose.

I bought some in Cyprus a few years ago - it was quite common in the photo-stores there.

Regards,
Neil.

From the horse's mouth (Ilford tour last year), it is not FP4+, but not surprisingly, its actual composition is secret. Reading between the lines, I would guess it is more "robust" than FP4+ - perhaps more suitable for tropical climes etc.

Cheers, Bob.

I have Ilford fact sheet of this film, hopefuly it helps you. See attachment.

There are Ilford tours? How do you get on them? I only live 2 miles from them and have often thought that it would be fascinating to take a look. On the other hand, I then get the late, great Peter Sellers' voice in my head saying "Is it dark in there Eccles?".

It was a one-off tour arranged by Simon Galley at Ilford who posts here from time to time. I do recall he suggested one this year but no one seems to have taken him up on it. Perhaps if Simon started a new thread on the idea: the previous suggestion was somewhat buried in the middle of another thread.

Yus, it is rather dark in places, Bluebottle

Cheers, Bob.

I think this is the same film which was sold under the OWRO name in 120 size a few years ago. I still have some left. The rolls I used were fine.

Many thanks. Re Yus, it is rather dark in places, Bluebottle

I don't know, I'll light a match and see (Eccles)

I noticed two things in the data sheet: first, there were no sensitometry curves; second, it says that the films have wide latitude. It sounds like they are designed for simple box cameras. This often involves some compromises in other areas, but many general use filme like that have been excellent (e.g. Verichrome Pan). They may very well be double coated to enhance the latitude.

Ilford made a Pan 100 and a Pan 400 film, I think, up until their bankruptcy/reorganization problems a couple years ago. They used to have data sheets on their website for the film. They probably discontinued this product due to marketplace redundancy, but don’t quote me on that. This film may be only a few years old and probably still in date since Freestyle is pretty good about telling you if your buying a out of date film. The best way to know for sure would be to ask Freestyle what the expiration date is before you buy the stuff.

James,

It's still made. I was on the factory tour last year as well and it was pointed out to us in the warehouse where packs of it were sitting on a shelf. Ilford were a bit coy about its relationship to other products but the thinking behind it seems to be that it is an economy line to help Ilford dealers in certain markets who are facing competition from cheap unofficial "grey" imports of Ilford films & other makes of film. The two films (100 & 400) seem to be regarded as pretty robust products. The only source in the UK I know of is the one previously mentioned, First Call. They do not sell out of date film.

Hi everybody here,
I am Czech and well knowing these films. I used both of them, PAN 100 and 400. It is said, here in Czech Republic, that it is a cheeper version for a middle European market. I am not able to confirm that. The truth is, that films are usually cheeper than FP4+ or HP5. But I have matched film PAN 100 and FP4+ without visible differences.
