Steve, What actually takes place when you turn the defocus ring. The heliar has 3 groups. G1 G2 are usually together in the front with G3 in the rear. When you turn the defocus controller what gets seperated from what, and by how much. Wondering if I can accomplish the same thing with my "ordinary" Heliar.

My understanding is that the defocus ring moves the third element in the middle.

David is correct; the center element, which is in front of the iris, moves back and forth.

Attached is a pic of the Universal Heliar I made when inquiring about mounting it into a Compound #5 (Not!). I think this pic has enough resolution to show how it works.

I use mine with a bulb-activated shutter that's like a "Luc" shutter that mounts on the front of the lens with three thumb screws. It's got three positions--open, bulb, and instananeous, which is about 1/15 sec., and I had Frank Marshman add strobe sync to it, so I can use it with strobes on any of my big portrait lenses.

Steve, it looks like it moves quite a distance in there with that big helical. How much, and which direction. Of course I'm trying to accomplish the same thing with mine by removing the group, turning the rear out a few threads, and re-assembling leaving the front out the same distance as I added between. Looking at yours does that seem possible, or is it moving 1/2 and inch or something.

I measured the movement, and it's approximately 7/8" - 15/16. Zero position (no diffusion) is back against the iris, and the #5 position (maximum diffusion) is 7/8" forward towards the front, or subject end of the lens.

I'm headed out the door to meet Jerry Greer at Clingman's Dome, and have the Dagor/Trigor combo with me. Wish me luck, I think I have the developer issues solved. Everyone was basically right except me of course. I'll be back around mid afternoon tomorrow unless something really good or really bad happens.

Jim, With all the talk going on about the Heliar, I am worried you might get confused, to save you the frustration and any confusion, just ship the lens to Colorado and I'll email you back with detailed reports about how it performs.





Folks in Canon City Colorado need Heliars too!!!

My guesses are
1) it should go cheap.
2) It should be even more diffuse than a universal heliar at 5.

This is a good place to announce that last night I had a dream about lenses! In just a few short weeks you guys have addicted me to LF. Soon I'll be selling the wife's jewelry for a lens fix......is there a LFA?

Hey, me the same. Been using 35mm all the time when this 4x5 addiction struck me. I hope I did not make the wrong choice. I got to get a 4x5 enlarger which is much dearer and find a room larger for me to work with. You are lucky that you have your wife's jewellery to sell, I have none.

How did you get that 30cm into a shutter? I compared mine up against an Ilex #5 and it was too big to fit--way too big for the iris.

I've got a 30 cm in a big compound V also. Shotput weight.

Did it fit directly? It looks like the one on the picture may have been modified.

I just checked mine--the rear element is about 2.5". The compound max iris is 2.53" (according to http://lensn2shutter.com/shutters.html). So, it should work.

Mine was factory done. It's straight in-out barrel dimension is same size as shutter opening.

I'll see if it is a direct fit.

I just picked up my new toy--Century Veiw #1. I think the lens/shutter combination would likely kill the front standard!
