Its a compact camera from the 1990's.Is the lens properly mounted? Is the f/stop set for automatic operation?

According to the manual (page 40), "E" means battery incorrectly installed. (Perhaps you put one of the CR123 batteries in backwards?)
I don't know if the OP camera does that but it's possible to design a camera that way.That would be something if a battery powered device can provide an error message when the battery is not installed correctly!
I would be interested to hear how any electronic device can provide an error code indicating it's battery has been installed incorrectly but that would surely hijack the thread . . .I don't know if the OP camera does that but it's possible to design a camera that way.
