I am going to purchase either of these scanners over the next week, but am wanting to know a bit more information before I do. Optically, I doubt there is much between the two even though the V750 has the additional coating/filtering. That said, I believe the differences mainly are, better software packages, Fluid mount kit is included, and faster scanning over the V700?

I can get the V700 for $504 on Amazon, and the V750 for $731. So for an additional $227, are the additional features truly worth it? Can the fluid mount accessory be added to the V700 and at what cost?. What is the difference in scanning times? Is the software that much better with the V750?

Most of the people on the Epson scanner group Yahoo group suggest that the 700 does as good a job as the 750. That said I do not have one because I decided it just would not do the job that I wanted it to do. The maximum resolution specs are way too optimistic, actual is still only around 2400ppi or less.

And from the money that you save between the two, you can buy a fluid mount system from ScanScience to regain the ability to wet mount films.

Also you might want to look at the Microtek M1 which is said to be a slight improvement in quality over the Epson scanners. Read from about here to the end http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=27341&page=17

Or pick up the issue of the magazine that has the review. I do not think there is a wet mount kit for that scanner yet, but it is only a matter of time. http://www.scanscience.com/

As far as software goes, you will probably want to step up to Viewscan at some point.

Andrew, if you do go for an Epson, have a look first at the Mounting Station made by betterscanning.com - it provides a good alternative to the extra bits on the 750. I'm also a big fan of Vuescan and don't miss Silverfast in the least.

The Microtek Artixscan M1 doesn't have ICE or better saying an IR channel to remove dust and scratches. The bundled Silverfast does a very bad job on removing dust and scratches.

In addition Microtek features the worst support I've ever experienced.

The Microtek software is also dreadful. I have owned two Microtek scanners and hated the Microtek software of both of them.

Word is that the Microtek M1 is a bit better than the Epson V750, but there have been some reports of software driver problems. I would hold off a few months to see how all of this plays out before buying a M1.

Thanks guys. Seems like the V750 is the right choice for now. I'll be using Vuescan and mostly scanning B+W and I hear that the software with either scanner is really geared more for color scanning rather than B+W.

I like my 750, though my decision was easy. I was stuck with it, as nobody local carried the 700 and I didn't want to order this cross-border.

Wait...

This is always a good choice if you can. If things go well in the next few weeks/months I will be buying one of these scanners (the 700 over the 750 if I go with epson), but I'll put off the purchase as long as I can.

I've not been impressed by either comapny's software and I think most people put way too much emphasis on the software of the consumer scanners. You are far better off doing all colour, contrast and density adjustments after the scan and rely upon the scanning software to handle the raw capture and mecanical manipulation of the device -- that is generally managed well by even the simplest scanner software. I've yet to find any scanning software, professional or consumer, that did a better job of density, contrast and colour correction then average to good image editing software.

I hear the Vuescan is really better suited to B+W scanning as the consumer/pro-sumer flatbeds are really geared more for color and the software doe snot do as good a job on B+W... or so I hear. I mybe misinformed, but I know of a great deal of folks who use Vuescan over the bundled software

Hi Andrew. I have owned both, the 700 at work, the 750 at home. I find no discernable differences in performance scanning 4x5 negatives.
