Epson v600 scanning orange shadow with holes?

I have never seen this defect before. I thought it was a shadow of the film strip but it looks different than the holes from the strip. (Usually) its green/purple/whatever color lines through the middle or edges of the frame being scanned and i know its due to dust or particles on the scanning glass or calibrators. That problem is fixed when I wipe it down! Well, I cleaned everything down completely, tried re-adjusting the strip, etc. I am scanning my negative directly onto the glass as per usual and this is happening with every strip I try.

Has anyone else has this issue or is this thing basically broken now.

Is there a reason you don't use the recommended film holder? Have you tried to use it just to see if it scans properly?

Yes I've seen such dramatic differences in scans comparing with and without the film holder. Since the filmholder creates more space between the film strip and glass the scans come out way less focused.
Actually I've figured it all out and its because some of the film was bending/curling backwards! Solved with tape.

The focal point for the V600 is the height above the glass caused by the holder. That's how the factory focuses the scanner. That should be the optimal location. But if the glass platen scan works for you, I guess that's OK too.

Yeah, not sure how things stay in focus without the holder, not to mention newton rings.

If film is arched it only makes contact with the glass on the very edges of the strip - no Newton rings

Depends on the amount of cupping. Either way it wont be in focus, at least not per the scanners design.
I also would not tape anything to a scanner...
