I have one of these venerable scanners and has proved to be possibly the most reliable bit of hardware. It was even installed easily in my Windows 10 system, when originally it installed in my old computer which had a XP operating system! Now go figure that one!
Anyway, one of the quirks, some would say failings, was the inability of the 35mm negative holders being unable to hold negatives flat when they had a strong curl.
On the reasoning that documents are held against the glass platten and produce sharp reproductions, I dispensed with the negative holders and after marking out where the negatives should lie when scanning, placed the negatives emulsion side down and then a piece of Anti Newton Ring glass from a picture frame was placed over the top. The scans were completely sharp all over and are probably the best scans that I have ever made from that device. There was no trace of the Anti Newton Ring treatment from the glass showing on the scans.
The only extra thing to do was to reverse the image in the pre-view before the final scan.
