Epson seems to be selling refurbished V850 scanners with 1-yr warranty and option of a 1-yr add-on service. Price for the first is $699. Same package as new. Seems like a good deal. Order direct from their site. Much as I'd prefer NOT to go this route, it's cheaper than buying a pixel shift enabled DSLR / Mirrorless camera for the same quality. Slower, too, of course... but with 4X5, that's not the same as 35 or 120 where I'm sticking with DSLR scans for everyday stuff.

Link is here where you have to scroll down to find the v850: https://epson.com/Clearance-Center/...768cb02a9393&gclsrc=3p.ds#scrollTgt_onRefresh

Enjoy and save some $'s - or not.

I just checked that link and the V850 does not appear.

It was there this morning. When it sells, the machine is removed. It was there when I posted. They seem to be putting up one at a time. I bought one after missing one ahead of it. Check tomorrow or Monday early a.m. and see what's there.

So there isn't a "big pile" of these V850s. Maybe it's better to try eBay.

I worked for a time in a retail store that sold computer equipment. We’d have customers buy something then bring it back saying it didn’t work. During slow times, the computer guys would try these devices and found they did work - most likely the customer got home and was told by a spouse or parent to take it back. We couldn’t resell the device, so we sent it back to the manufacturer.

Based on that, I’ve bought several refurbished Eason products. They’ve all worked as new. I’d say it’s a far better risk than ebay.

An Epson refurb has the same exact warranty as a new, off the shelf scanner. You don't get that on Ebay.
I bought a 4990 about a decade ago; it was in perfect shape, came with all the accessories for 35mm to 8x10 and never gave me a problem until I sold it about 5 years ago.
I would have absolutely NO problem buying another Epson refurb.

Agreed, but how predictable is the available of V850s (or even V800s) on the Epson refurb site?

All you have to do is bookmark the site and go there daily. If that's too much of a bother, then pay full price.

I had to visit on and off for about a month. It was worth the 50% savings in my book.

100% when one is listed, and 0% when one is not.
Or less flippantly, my sense is that Epson sells a fair number of their top of mid-range scanners, so they regularly have refurbished ones available. However, at present neither Epson USA or Epson Canada has any stock of new versions of those scanners, so there probably aren't a lot coming back into the system for refurbishing.

I realize this is an old thread but I find the information very helpful nonetheless. I'm sure Epson is as reliable as Canon in their refurbished gear - I have purchased from Canon - so to get a product of this type at about half price would be a pretty good purchase. It would be a great replacement for my 1999 Epson Perfection 1200PHOTO :D.

It’s from last Saturday. Hardly old. Unless your definition of old is radically different from the rest of the world.

I have bought refurbished Epson printers and scanners in the past and they preformed well. There were no refurbished V850 when I bought mine, had there been I might have bought one.
