If I were to acquire a Epson 1640XL for scanning larger silver prints etc; is it also realistic to scan large format film for proofs with this model? The base machine doesn't appear to have a transparency hood.

Any other experiences with the Epson 1640XL; perhaps how it compares to the A4 Epson V700?

THe 1640XL is a pretty good scanner. Resolution is not as high as with the V700, but the 1640XL has a focusing mechanism which is a big plus. You must have the transparency media adaptor to scan film with the 1640XL, otherwise you are limited to reflected scanning.

With the TMA quality of your LF scans would be good enough to allow for modest magnification of 2X-4X.
