Enlarger Timer Crapped Out

You can find plenty of the repeating audible timers on eBay for well under $50; I think they beat the heck out of the old rotary ones (the bleeps are handy for dodge/burn timing). Very precise too, down to 1/10th second, and really simple to use.

They also have a footswitch jack, which I love love love… if it doesn't come with the switch, you can open the case, drill a hole, and wire in a 1/4" guitar jack, and use a musician's momentary footswitch, widely available for ten bucks or so.

You want it good, cheap and fast the best way is to use none. Play the music and count the beats. For the long term build one yourself that way you have one that fit your need exactly.

I've never looked into enlarger timers before, so in my search, I've found some interesting ones that are good for processing uses as well. There's the Gralab 645 that looks interesting... and about $130 after shipping. I wouldn't mind spending that money on something that I can get multiple uses out of. Anyone have experience with these?

The Gralab 645 is no doubt a good timer, but when I try to use one in a friend's darkroom, I find it way too complex to use .

If you were closer, I would give you an extra Gralab 300 timer I have. The big Gralab 300 timers aren't perfect, but they are certainly usable.

I have a GraLab 300 that I bought cheaply on APUG.

It's a nice timer, works well. I used one for quite a while. The output relay died on one channel, so I switched the enlarger to the other outlet. Worked with it like that until I bought an f-stop timer, and now it lives in my darkroom's closet.

Just got this whole kit for $100 CAD. That would be $70 USD...what a steal. Came with a Minolta 50mm 2.8 Lens, 35 mm neg carrier too! Thanks again MattKing for the link.

Hey KidA, I have a vivitar V1 as my enlarger and it is a really good bit of kit, if not that well known. Very solid, dichroic filters, but the best bit is the "light pipe" which delivers cold light to glassless negative carriers, so minimal dust problems and no negative popping!. Hopefully it came with nice clean condensers. The neg carriers are available in all sizes up to 6x6 (I am not sure if there was a 6x7). If you are missing any they wouldn't be complicated to make as they are just a flat sandwich with the neg in the middle, as you can see from the 35mm one you have.
