I am writing this here - not knowing, whether it is the right forum...

I have now several students, coming from abroad.
That is really nice, but as they come from Hungary/lithuania/Latvia/Russia and so on, my books in danish, about the basics in photography are falling somewhat short....:rolleyes:

So

Do you know about good, simple books in english, that deals with the basics in cameras - film exposures, and maybe darkroom work..

We have a lot of those books here in DK, but I don't know what to look for in english..

They don't have to be new - I tend to like older books more (as they often describe more in detail, than the modern books do..)

Any you could recommend?

I'd be greatful.
thanks

Henry Horenstein's Basic Black and White Photography is a good reference. The Ansel Adams series "The Camera", "The Negative", and "The Print" is a Bible in my house. These are probably two recommendations you'll see again and again because they do a good job.

I'm happy to send you a PDF of a chapter called 'The Basics of Photographic Printing' from our book 'Way Beyond Monochrome' (unfortunately sold out at the moment). Our book is more for the advanced darkroom user, but this chapter is a good starting point and includes solid techniques for beginners to turn into advanced users.

Henry Horenstein's book, Black & White Photography: A Basic Manual, and also his other book Beyond Basic Photography are very good.

Gandolfi,

Henry Horenstein's books, “Black & White Photography”, and “Beyond Basic Photography” are basic text books for high school and beginning college photography courses (Photo 1 and Photo 2) in the US. They are both easy to read and abundantly available used on eBay. I got mine for $3.00 each. Admittedly shipment to you would be expensive, but the books themselves would be cheap.

Henry Horenstein's

Wonderful for the teacher ! There is no ideology or manifesto;
just how photography works. From that point of view, they are unique.

I'll send you a copy you can print for your students, but make sure to get the Horenstein book too. I got a copy of it too, and it is a very good book for beginners.
