Hi there,

Have you noticed that even hinting at something like GAS, be it on a forum or in person, makes other photographers go extremely defensive and vexed?.. Even if you just state that you do not really care about gear, but do not judge anyone?..

Have you noticed that stating matter-of-factly that you shoot film while being among digishooters makes them angry and, again, defensive?.. Even if you present it as a curiosity and without an air of superiority?..

A guilty conscience needs no accuser.

I have experienced the other way around. . . . when digi people speak of photography anaolog people cringe, . . .. . . when discussing content, conceptual works, tech-e camera geeky people cringe, because I am not talking about line pairs per inch, or density of zone III, When discussing low tech pinhole camera, somebody has to bring up how awesome a double gauss zeiss lens is compared.

so. . . . to answer your questions ,. . . . NO to both

If you've experienced it, you must be hanging out with the wrong crowd.

Get better friends. I have never notice criticism for GAS. Who pays attention to complaining digisnappers any longer?

I have been snubbed on several occasions, back when I was still shooting with my Rebel XT, by other digital users. Passive-aggressive comments here and there gave me the feeling that PROs with expensive gears were the only ones allowed to use a camera and that amateurs shouldn't even share their pictures. I've been on several forums over the years and I learned that there is always a click of snobbish entitled stiff necks who believes that they are above everyone else and that they are the embodiment of truth. Unfortunately, these stiff necked purist are not just on forums, they also exist in real life.

I have found that if you carry with you a Kodak Medalist or Nikon F5 and swing it around wildly by it's strap, no one messes with you

Mandatory music. I see you bright as day, swinging this Kodak Medalist at a swarm of digital Canikons. loll

I think this cuts both ways, but it says more about the insecurities of the "militants" than it does about the relative merits of either process. Analog and digital can coexist.

I do run into them. I used to take the time to, depending on their attitude, educate or put down. Now I do not waste my time or energy on the snobbish ones and talk to the curious or interested ones.

I certainly encounter people who wonder why I continue to use film, along with people who are simply curious about what it is like to use film in the current market, but I don't know that I have ever encountered anyone who I would consider as a photographer who has been rude or dismissive about my analogue choices.

Same here. I've never experienced hostility by using a film camera, neither by friends nor by strangers. Well, perhaps once by some idiot on an internet forum, but certainly never in the "real world".

"They still make film?" is what I hear time and time again. I then ask them if they have an old camera hanging around and if I can have it.

Digital Enthusiasts ask 'Why' and pros either ignore me and get on with their job or tell me about the bad old days. It's the kids that get a kick out of a large old camera with no review screen and a shrieking motor drive. I let them use the film advance.
