"Now I have put my foot into this court,by having the 5K print competition at my gallery next spring, and judging by the poor response for this one I am concerned , actually crapping my pants."

Bob, There are artist bulletin boards on the internet where you can post for your contest. I know of two which get pretty good results. PM me and I'll provide links.

I am totally suprised with the lack of entrys into this competition, I joined this group little over a year ago and I have to say 43 entrants is a pitiful # considering all the pontification that goes on here about members printing expertise.
I have started to join the blind exchange , the print share, and when aggie announced the magazines print competition I gladly sent in the maximum number of prints.( I have done this to actively support members initiatives. as well as Arts photo walk that was great fun)
Now I have put my foot into this court,by having the 5K print competition at my gallery next spring, and judging by the poor response for this one I am concerned , actually crapping my pants.
Regarding sending prints. For the life of me , is this not what we all do , and is this not what all the talk about densitometers, graphs, concoctions of chemistrys. If there are so many experts here why was this contest not supported with beautiful prints from around the world.( I know that I was happy with my prints and excited at the possible chance to be exhibited in Aggies first magazine.
I guess my beef is not with the people on this thread who may of entered but the thousands of members who did not.
Bloody hell , as Sean mentions 5-10 dollars and shipping /entry fee to support a very good intention , the members here that do all the expert pontification should have done less talking and made some prints to enter.
Just my canadian 2cents

LOL...Bob you have nothing to worry about, it is very different when you are offering cash prices. The prices you are giving are very geneorus even if they are little dollars...

I know I will be sending my prints soon... :D

I'm surprised as well and was hoping we wouldn't have to promote too much outside of APUG. I suspect we will have to promote the 5k Competition as well as the conference to the entire photo community.

I am sure many people here in APUG feel insecure of their photographs and printing skills and never entered a competition or shown their work in public.
For example, I am one of them. I don't consider my work "good enough" for a competition, especially since I have been involved in photography for only a couple years now.

Our little dollars could be spent quite nicely up here, maybe a couple of nice restauants , few shows in the theatre district. BTW if you win I do love Creemore beer cold , with a nice grilled calimari dinner to boot at Grano's, actually I have a few friends that find this to be a pleasant experience to pontify over photography, good luck in the competition.

That is why we divided the categories by experience opposed to subject. It was our hope that people like you would find comfort in this and want to participate.

We are doing the conference the same way. There will be some higher end workshops, but the concentration is on the newer less experienced photographers. The geeks with charts are more than welcome (and needed), but they need no convincing when it comes to this craft. It is the newbies we want to grow.

Well, Bob & Mr. Callow.... I am seriously considering entering this contest. I would have entered the Emulsion one, but, alas... did not feel I had anything worthwhile to contribute... that's not to say I actually do now, but geez... you've got a "novice" category! Hey! I'm about as novice as they come! hahaha! :D Then, by the time the next Emulsion contest comes along... I'll be ready!

When I PM'ed Bob the 2wo links for art opportunities I didn't realise it was for this conference and contest. I'll do some research and see if I can come up with a few more.

In addition to the cash rewards and exhibition space getting photos published is also a good incentive for participation. Since it is a year from now there might be the time to find a magazine that promotes more traditional photography out there that might be interested in having an article on APUG and it's "international conference". It can also publish the grand prize winning photographs as part of the piece.

I didn't enter the _Emulsion_ contest, because contests are just not my thing, but if you want participation for the 5K Competition I'll submit something just to support the event.

Of course we want you to enter! I am also hopeful that Goldfarb couple will find their way to the conference.

As I am one of those "guilty" of not entering, can someone please tell me why it is automatically assumed that we want to enter a competition and/or have our photographs judged, even if it is for a good cause?

I'm with Jeanette, I was a little intimidated to enter the emulsion contest but I will try to find something worthwhile to enter in the 5k competition. I guess I have to get my feet wet sometime.

I didn't enter the emulsion contest because I couldn't find a category for my stuff. I guess my favored subject matter -- industrial landscape -- could be stretched to qualify as "landscape," ...but only just, and without a chance in hell of being favored over the more traditional work that would be entered.

With the 5k competition, it's easy: I can enter as a novice and not worry about it.

Quick note, the judging is done, and Mateo will be picking up the entries today. I will get the tallies from him, and add up and average between the three judges and see who the winners are.

Great, thanks for the information and effort on this contest. When the magazine is finally finished and printed I'm sure you will get satisfaction for a job well done. Many people including myself are looking forward to finding it in their mailbox.
