maybe its about taste ?
i've seen work that is worshipped by some folks
and it didn't really do much for me, and seen
work was rough around the edges and it hit me like
a ton of bricks ...

They look pretty good to me. I really like the one by Owen Harvey.

I know I'd love to be as talented as any of them, frankly. As Mr Harvey says,

I shoot film because I love the process of waiting to see what I have on the rolls. I also love how well it deals with the differences between harsh shadows and highlights and remains details in both.

Since they all seem to have mastered the art of sharp focus and not blowing the highlights in every shot, I'd say they were a cut above many a photographer. (Although probably the most important lesson I've learned is that blown highlights and soft focus are part of my artistic vision, dahlinks... )



(The Cian Oba-Smith one is also a favourite, I should add, it's an excellent subject and the quality of the light is superb - London council estates do not normally look that, well, almost bucolic for want of a better word.)

I’m afraid you’re mistaken, it's just about analog photography, that's why APUG is so great.

in the post you quoted, i was referring to the images chip uploaded. ( michael r was referring to them )
i can see why his friend suggested some looked like italian film stills

It is! all about taste!

Taste to judge their young works, taste to call them as emerging, taste to appoint those expert tasters (who must judge & call), taste to taste the taste of the tasters ... !!! ???

It's all barf, IMHO.

In my humble case, I would like to know whether this comment of yours is as it reflects or it really has justified reasons behind (I'm not talking about any work to compare with) ... and if so, I'd like to read it, even if what you have to say it is not my cup of tea!

Sometimes it is difficult to step beyond one's own preferences (which might be the same as "taste") to make a judgement as to aesthetic quality (or even technical quality)
Sometimes it not so difficult of course; I think it depends on how much capacity for tolerance and open-mindedness one has.

One doesn't have to dismiss things one doesn't like, or feel indifferent towards. I don't care for Cartier-Bresson, by and large, but that doesn't stop me recognising what it is in his photography that is admirable and led to his fame and influence; and I can't look for very long at a Francis Bacon, but being sent to place of almost visceral fear and disgust by his work doesn't stop me regarding him a genius to be revered.

These photographs are "not my thing" (it's not so much I dislike them, simply that they don't interest me), but that doesn't lead me to dismiss them as poor photographs (or the photographers as bad photographers). I just have to leave my judgement in abeyance. I might change my mind very readily if I saw them as a body of work in a gallery for instance, or I might not. Who knows?

Among many other important aspects, in addition to those two (rightly quoted) related to the capabilities of human behavior.

Indeed! And a very close example is we ourselves in our own lifes with our own works, has not anyone of you appreciated or judged any particular photograph you've made (or seen) some other time before, in a different way? Think why this happens ...
