I think this is quite amazing to watch. Think of the technology of photography and television. What amazing changes during the last 70 years.
The planning of this event.......mind boggling! All available in high definition.

There is still resentment of colonialism to be found in parts of Canada, particularly within the Indigenous communities - where opinions on her range from indifference to rage. I don't think any of those groups think she did anything to help their situation, yet their situation was created by the Crown. Canada also has a French population that has at times wanted to separate from the rest of Canada. I'm certain a large percentage of those people don't hold the monarchy in high regard.
But, in the main, Canada's day-to-day business and governance has nothing to do with the monarchy.
And most people here probably know more American history than Canadian....

The new king spoke about the heavy burdens of being king. The only burdens that seem obvious are the need to make formal addresses to conferences such as the one I attended long ago, cutting ribbons for opening shopping malls, and a Christmas message. Perhaps could add being pope of the Anglican Church. But these burdens are accompanied by a very generous allowance.
Perhaps I’m missing something, so perhaps members who are British subjects could fill me in.

This reminded me of The Man Who Fell To Earth. David Bowie played an alien who told his employee that he had learned about earth from our television transmissions. Rip Torn said "You learned about us from our television!?", and Bowie replied "Yes, but there's a funny thing about television. It doesn't tell you everything".

I think that's absolutely true. No matter what's being shown on the screen, the point of view, editorial policies and beliefs are what you see.

A short list. Feel free to expand.

Pros:
  • Full time, well experienced diplomatic leader to greet foreign dignitaries
  • Person who knows all the protocols such has not walking in front of the Queen and making her walk around the OAF
  • Person to do the meet and greet PR role
  • Some people love and are attached to the royal family
  • Continuity of history
  • Tradition
Cons:
  • Perceived high cost for a luxuary
  • Not needed in modern world
  • Better use for the money
  • Better use for the land, jewels, ...

Independent arbiter with final decision authority if there is doubt about who actually won an election.
Now which country could have recently used one of those?

Duh. Let me guess, although normally the US would not need that and getting rid of the Electorial College would fix things.

We had that beginning in 1776 and thereafter.
We also became citizens and not subjects.
However, it is amusing to see grown men wearing antiquated costumes.
As most have noted, she seems to have been a nice modest lady, whether a queen or not. She, and the Middle Eastern monarchs put truth to the saying that thoroughbred racing is the sport of kings.

The last time the UK had a pretender, it was Bonnie Prince Charlie. Our pretender has none of the intelligence, charm, wit and legal claim. To take it easy on the monitors.

OK, I'm guilty of posting on political structures, which is too close to politics to be appropriate for Photrio.
mea culpa.
I'm going to say one more thing, and then stop.
It is best not to equate the role of the monarchy in 1776, 1867, 1901, 1931 or 1942 with the actual, practical role today.
In these last 70 years - during the reign of Elisabeth II - it has changed immensely.
And there won't be a test on the importance of those various dates.
But I will make a point of mentioning that I have been a citizen of Canada for my entire life, and that has applied to all Canadians since at least 1947.
So if we can get back to our recently deceased Queen, and in particular anything photographic in relation to her, we can keep this thread going.

There's a huge Burdon of expectation, the media and public have built up a huge persona around the queen and royal family, King Charles is always going to be compared to the Queen Elizabeth. I would think he and William will be looking at downsizing to something more like the Swedish. monarchy.

More importantly, does King Charles use a Leica?
