Dylan Ellis Gallery
Thursday, October 16, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.

This new gallery at our space in Leaside marks the beginning of an even greater commitment to making and selling photography at Elevator. This very special gallery will honour the work of world-renowned photographers who are committed to their craft and to the process of photography.

The inaugural opening on Thursday, October 16 will showcase the work of British photographer Joe Cornish. Cornish is known for his large format landscapes.

Working mainly with 4x5 cameras, his images have been featured in many photography magazines, including Outdoor Photography. He has also authored several books of his images, teaches landscape photography, and owns two public galleries in Britain.

Three additional bodies of photographic works will be showcased on that evening; Colours of Venice by Joanne deBoehmler, B&W works by Denis Lalonde, and 'Beaucoup de fromage' Images of Paris by Kevin Viner.

This gallery will also honour the young man for whom it is named. Dylan Ellis was an integral member of the Elevator team for several years and he knew what it meant to take a good picture, and to make an even better print. We have missed Dylan immensely since his death in June; not only for the wonderful person he was, but too for the contribution he made to our work and the talent, energy and care he put into every job.

With this gallery we honour not just his memory, but all that he would have contributed to the world - the photographic world and beyond. Opening Thursday, October 16, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Bob,

I just got back from the opening, and have to say, you blew it.

The show was of extremely high quality, and showcased several accomplished artists of diverse viewpoint and presentation. With such a great show, how are you ever going to top it??? Eh?:D

I am a huge fan of Joe Cornish, and have to admit I gushed a bit. I have admired his images in magazine and book reproductions, but I was blown away by the large and beautifully presented prints. The look of 4X5 film is unique, and Joe's artistic vision makes the best of the medium.

The rest of the show was strong, and I really enjoyed every bit of it. Walked around several times.

Congratulations on a huge success, I am happy to see such a substantial contribution to the Toronto photography scene! Thank you!!!!

Thanks Jaan and John

We are exhausted right now and overwhelmed by the response. We estimated over 4 hundred visitors last night and those located near to us can drop by anytime, this weekend Joe and the other artists will be at the gallery to answer any questions between 1-4 Sat and Sun.

Jaan thank you for your kind remarks, Our next show will feature Bill Schwab and I know he will bring to Toronto a wonderful body of work. We are very interested in showcasing photography at its finest. For me *printer* I need to see live prints. This is why Les McLean is here with me and as a team we plan to produce hundreds of shows together with the intent to travel these shows internationally.

I was very heartened to see the place packed all evening. This level of interest in photography is wonderful.

I am going to try and come back for a second look. How long will the show be up? I want to bring my wife, but she is away 'til next week.

By the way, Joe was great - very friendly, and a bit humble about his work(!), which is stunning. Wow.

Joe Cornish's show will be up until mid Feb , and then we will be putting on Bill Schwab's work. Mid January Les is coming back to Toronto and the three of us will print Bills negs. Lots of good time in the darkroom pontifying about photography quaffing a few beers and trying to keep Dinesh in order.
We will be announcing the Dylan Ellis Gallery projected show lineup and the interesting artists we will be representing here in Canada.

The opening was certainly an excellent night and Joe's work set the standard that I know Bob and the team intend to maintain and even better it if that is possible. Congratulations Bob on making the dream a reality.

Bob and crew;
Congratulations on the Gallery and the show. Good coverage in the Globe and Mail (although they could have named Elevator).
Looking forward to next week in Calabogie.

I look forward to seeing all the great work.

Congratulations. I am proud to see good men/women doing work that matters, shown by men/women that have the courage to risk. In today's atomosphere of seeking guarantees through focus groups and market analysis I'm proud to know there are those out there that lead with their heart.

If there is an extra push that is needed that is what the orange jump suit is for. How can that fail?

It can't, not with the man that resides inside of it.

You should be proud,

best,

Monty

Thanks for posting the pics!

Damn Bob... the prints and gallery look great!!

They do!

I was reluctant to shoot too much - thought folks might get a bit nervous in case I was trying to swipe images...... but all the prints were remarkable. The really large inkjets (My guess around 40X50 inches, like the one Joe is standing in front of) were really eyecatching, even from the far end of the gallery. Big or small, regardless of medium, they were all gems. I'm going back soon!:D

Thanks all for the kind words. We believe that by showcasing talented artists , involving them in the whole process the general public can see some of the vision, beauty, passion we all have for this thing called photography.

Joe's large prints are indeed inkjet and they are 50inch x 60 inch image size floated with a white background mounted to aluminum.
These were very difficult to make and present, in fact we had to show them without plexi at the last minute as we ordered the wrong thickness. This is a learning curve we adapt too.

One thing that will be different about our gallery is that the curators are printers. Les McLean and Myself, all work will be printed in cahoots with the photographers by Les and myself. And all framing and presentation will be handled by our dedicated crew.
Every piece will be handled directly here in Toronto and it one of the reason's in this day and age, we are expanding our commitment to wet prints and new fangled digital methods.

We do have upcoming work slated, in platinum, enlarger fibre, digital fibre, inkjet, tri colour carbon, and RA 4.
Our very next project is to make enlarged negatives on Lambda on real film to make alternative prints and colour archival carbon prints to 30 x40 size.

We are looking for unique and talented photographers to show with us and as well we are looking to hook up with gallerys outside our region to display this talent.

This past week has been very difficult for Kevin and I as our gallery is in tribute to our wonderful , gentle, loving assistant Dylan who was taken away from us this past June, all kinds of different emotions came to a head for our staff / close Elevator friends and Dylan's family, this week. The crowds that came and all the wonderful response makes all this sensible to us now .

We are commited to make this a world class gallery , showing classic photography done in a time honoured fashion with a twist and we do appreciate the support for our efforts. A lot of people here on APUG and as well Large Format have become Elevator's very dear friends , who help us out with picking up travelers coming to Toronto to see us, showing them around the town, helping last minute in the 4 hour frenzy before any show and basically being available any time to help. On top of that the photographers from this connection that come and clearly demonstrate their skills and knowledge to our customers and staff as workshop teachers and leaders. It is all greatly appreciate.
One of our friends was Ted Harris who was taken away from us this year as well and I know, he would have helped Les and I with this project and future projects, and I am sure he would have put a stamp of approval on what we are doing and planning and freely give his knowlege to us on many, many levels.

Congratulations to the entire team, looks like a great space with great work...a fine memorial for Dylan Ellis, you have honored him well. With the commitment you describe, it will indeed become a world class gallery.
Will have to consider a trip up your way Bob to see the gallery and the rest of Elevator.

Well worth the trip Mike. There is something for everyone inside the labyrinth of Elevator. It is such a good feeling to be around an atmosphere completely devoted to the fine photographer. They do everything top shelf.

I'll be seeing the place Monday and am really looking forward to seeing it and Joe's work!
