At one time, it was more or less "Known" that KB-400 was in reality, cleverly disguised Ilford HP5+....Is it still?

Efke KB-400 is Agfa APX 400, according to Freestyle.

I'd almost prefer it to be Efke...at least that way, my expectations wouldn't be very high

But...Seriously ...is it any good? I like their 127 size R-100...I suppose that the 35mm size KB-100 is similar. If the 400 speed film is in fact APX-100, I'd not expect it to be anything like the KB-100/ r-100...???

It is the same as APX 400, but the cassettes are CRAP. You can tell just by looking at them, and then I dropped one once and the end popped off. It was an already-exposed roll, of course. IMO, go for Arista Premium if you need a cheap 400 film.

Use them for bulk rolling, don't drop them.

APX 400 can still be found via ultrafineonline.com. I think it's still about $30.00 for 100 ft.

I rather like APX 400 (it's not everyone's fave) in pyro devs. It soaks up a nice nealthy stain.

Efke doesn't have the machinery needed to make 400 film. This is why they still only manufacture the "old-style" KB 14, 17 and 21 under their own name and for Adox et al.
400 films like TriX and HP5 etc. calls for a thin multilayer manufacture process, which these older machines cannot accomplish.
