I'm out with the 8x10, late this past August, with working Efke IR, a 720, and a Wratten 87C. Which filter gives me the best result? A couple of prints were made, too...
Some people who want to check out IR don't want to go to the expense of an IR filter -- of whatever type -- because they made decide that IR is not for them.
But many of them can check out IR for just the cost of the IR film -- depending on what filters they already have.
Some try a strong RED filter like a 25A. That helps by cutting out the green and blue spectrums, but the IR effect is not very strong.
But, by simply adding strong GREEN filter like an X1 -- which cuts out the red spectrum -- in addition to the RED filter, the IR result is much stronger. And it might cost nothing at all -- except for the film.
Of course the results depend on the specific red and green filters you use as well as the IR film you use -- so results will vary.
And remember to adjust your focusing AFTER you attach the filters.
..., it's pretty muchthe same as just using a 720 filter alone.
