Does anyone know of an Australian source for Efke film? Seeing as how Efke seems to be the only maker left of slow b&w film I'd like to try some.

check Newdarks website. Not sure if they carry it but they do have some 'weird' stuff

Andrew, drop a line to J&C photo here in the states and see what you're looking at with shipping and import duties. They may be able to help you if there isn't a local source and the price might not be too bad. See if there are any others in oz who might be able to split an order to take advantage of a volume discount and lower shipping rates. Both the Efke 25 and 50 are great films. I've been spoiled by the 25, nothing like it for grain and contrast.

Thanks for the suggestion noseoil. I've been poking around the J&C website but I thought I'd check with other Aussie APUG members to find a local source before I send off an order.

Anyone from Oz want to split the postage on an Efke 25 order from J&C..? I'd most likely be buying a couple of 30m bulk rolls, we could split the cost according to weight.

Newdark are at http://www.newdark.com.au/

I had a quick look, but although they have exotica like Maco, Forte and Bergger, they don't seem to list Efke. Their film seems a bit expensive, by the way.

Incidentally, I don't know if mail is xrayed. I received a second hand camera from the USA sent by DHL or UPS, I can't remember. The vendor had included some 120 film. I phoned the shiping company to ask if they xray packages. It seemed to be top secret. Maybe they don't want to tell terrorists what checks are performed. The person on the phone said that packages are "scanned." I asked "do you mean xray," and he said "scanned."

I haven't tried the film since it's something I don't use. (Scala, Fuji CN,..)

We ship to Australia and New Zealand by US Post and UPS all the time and there has never been an X-Ray problem with any of the film.

Combining orders is a good idea if possible since the first pound is the most expensive to ship and it gets incrementally cheaper after that.

We are told that Postal is cheaper over all due to the cost of customs brokerage that UPS charges.

I placed an order for a small amount of film and some developing tubes from J and C recently and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of ordering and personal response.

After cheaper shipping costs were secured by J and C, they informed me a credit had been sent to my credit card.

As yet the order has not arrived, but every thing has been easy and efficient so far. And the prices reasonable.

Best,
John

Do you label the package "xray sensitive" or anything like that?

For Australia, Post is definitely cheaper as far as customs are concerned in the range AUS$500 to AUS$1000 (amount incl post, packing and insurance, exchange rate of day of transaction) since posted items in this range officially escape the $49 customs fee that is charged in addition to 10% GST. And sometimes items slip through the post without GST being charged. But the international shipping companies appear to have to be better organised than Australia Post. Fancy that, private industry being better tax gatherers than the government!
