Stand development was designed for tonal compression sometimes needed with the Zone System. For this purpose attention to detail is just as important as with other developing methods. It was not designed for people so they could cut corners. The best negatives are produced by observing the rules.

Ah that post was from a few years ago. I still do stand development, but not often. What I really intended to say was that it works very well for looser variables and from what I have developed with it, those variables didnt have much effect on the images that was discernible to me. But you are correct, if you want repeatable workflow and consistent results do please follow your development plans to the T. I do so with standard development.

but I always felt stand development was always a little hocus pocus, so not measuring water temp with a thermometer, or throwing in a few rolls with different exposures, or even wildly different exposures on the same roll, or not worrying too much about time, was all just good fun that made halfway decent negatives at the end.

Hmmm
I mix enough liquid and Rodinal for the Patterson formula 290 mls per film 2.9 mls Rodinal.
Times one, two, three, five or eight dependent on tank.
At 20C
Pour mix in invert a few times to dislodge bubbles.
Set alarm for 45-60 mins.
Do something else eg tax return...
When alarm rings dump developer pour in tempered water at temperature of developer just before pouring out.
Have not detected uneven development in +55 years.
You guys are over complicating stand, dilution etc.
Note no banging of tanks...

Most of my work do not need taming the contrast rather expanding a bit. Light in Bremen is very flat for most of the year.

*These days bit more exposure than expansion.

So I go normal way of development and 200 feet of ORWO UN54 went this way during last year.

Its boring because I do not have patience to wait that long to see my negatives.

Lack of patience would be a problem.
But 60 minutes at 20C gives high contrast.
I need to get some UN54!
We send you our clouds when we have exposed them.

The only thing I do that would be different would be to add a minuscule drop of photoflo in the tank. Reduces surface tension and I have yet to see streaks when I do it.

Another thing I did is reduce the development time. Using full stand for Thornton 2 bath, in two baths. 4-5 minutes (adjusted for film) for both baths suffices and the reduced development time does not allow much time to let the streaking occur.

Thornton full stand.... 4min both baths.

Some storm clouds will be good rather than thick grey blanket that leaks all the time.

Prices for UN54 have gone up a bit but still it is a very good film.

Eager to see the negatives makes me impatient to wait in any development session.
