Actually you can do that (I'd use a red onion), I first did that to extract compounds from onion.

Some water + some onion, then into a beaker, add some alkali (say carbonate), heat and boil for a while. Filter through coffee filter paper, cool and use. Not sure how long a room temp extract would take otherwise. But ethanol at 60% is written to be effective.

I also extracted dimethyltryptamine using various solvents in Acid to Base extraction since we have DMT in such abundance in plants over here everywhere. I never got around to using it, I wanted to try it as a colour developer since it has no hydroxyls, this was the time I was fiddling around with rodial, parodinal and phenidone on colour film and seeing some weak colour results.


Although if you go down that route you might have your local feds knocking on your door since I hear they're pretty uptight there as opposed to over here you can do basically whatever you want that's nout endangering others or dodging tax or dealing black market substances.

The same with psilocyn in magic mushrooms.. in fact many poisons and psychoactive substances look like they'd appear to be developers of some kind. Mushrooms are easy to start cultures for and grow too.


However there is a compound in many mushrooms that's not a poison or psyoactive drug, and not a controlled substance, and is common in some food and vege shop mushrooms which I was looking at... I need to remember the name of the compound.. this would be a good idea.



The other thing that may be worth looking into is mushroom derived dyes.

Yes. With the right solvent you can extract and concentrate the active ingredent you want. They are very efficient. Another tool is the Molecular Still. (invented by EK chemists)

I was expecting something out of reach, but this isnt so different to a simple glass still which I have already... excellent

And that is derived from thiourea which is considered a carcinogen in California. I guess they should outlaw oyster mushrooms.

Are you taking a jab at California?

You'd have to outlaw a lot of foods...

well my honey + sodium carbonate = glucic acid experiment went nowhere

I didn't think it would be so simple...and it wasn't

I'll toss a red onion in the blender soon and see what happens then

Glucic Acid doesn't look like it has the structure to be a developeing agent.





Vanillin on the other hand, which is another one I thought of ages back but never got around to trying does look it'd work.




As well as Eugenol which I was planning on getting from cloves, according to wiki, also cinnamon, and nutmeg are sources.

I had heard of vanilla before...I think I may have tried it w/o success

someone told me vanilla works but is weak

I need to find the notes from last time I tried this kinda stuff so I don't waste time repeating experiments

have you tried UNROASTED coffee beans ?
or other kinds of foods high in caffic acid ( kale ? blue cabbage ? mung bean sprouts ?)
most people concentrate on roasted coffee, instant coffee &c
but i have heard that the caffic acid ( like caffeine ) is burned off
in the roasting process ...

Heck. Just try some salad dressing at Denney's. It loaded with sodium sulfite and only God knows what else.

Well, I think it is actually caffeic acid that is doing the developing. I would think that caffeine tablets might have that refined out.

just tossed the film from my honey test into fixer...the undeveloped strip clears normally...but the film strip that went through the honey/sodium carbonate goop still looks brown

dunno if this is some kind of stain or if it actually worked....worth testing again at least

ok Honey-110 dilution Bee take 2

500ml water.....too much sodium carbonate....3 tbsp honey

this time the film went thru a camera.....and I'll boil it for a while before using
