We all could spend 10% of our time on anything we wanted that could be used to make an image.

Excellent policy, fun is essential and must have contributed greatly to employee satisfaction, when asked going the extra mile is then no imposition.
Given the price of copper now that is never going to run!!

One guy in our labs made a digital camera. Can you imagine how hilarious that was at the time? And it worked! We all could spend 10% of our time on anything we wanted that could be used to make an image. I made a Kodabromide paper equivalent using copper instead of silver as one of my projects.

And Eastman Kodak would most likely have owned the results.

And I got a patent, a publication or a talk at a conference, plus "other valuable consideration". And besides at that tender age with EK, the project that I picked came from one started, but never finished by someone else. He then took it up again and got excellent results.

All of which was justly deserved!

My point was that the policy benefited both employer and employee. And because of the fruits of it, us consumers as well.

My Dad wasn't inventing new technologies, but he certainly was encouraged by his employer (Kodak Canada) to innovate. And when he and his staff did, other staff, dealers and others in the retail chain and customers did benefit, either from better service, or lower cost.

Matt, back in the "good old days" everyone benefited from this. This was one of the best decisions that management ever made. It is just too bad that some other decisions were not very good.

PE, that's very interesting. Did the prints have a coppery look to them? I'd love to see a print. Is copper paper difficult to make? Thanks.

They were normal toned images (B&W) with no coppery look to them. The finely divided copper image degraded rapidly in air to finally become a ghost of itself in about 6 hours.

Making the emulsion was very very difficult and involved 2 toxic corrosive chemicals. There is a defensive publication or a research disclosure out there somewhere that describes the entire procedure, but my memory does not include details as it was about 50 years ago. Sorry.
