In Spain the internet service provider offers you mailboxes. They have no extra cost, no advertising or... They are yours.

but the flip side of this design is that you can't forward your mail anywhere and you cannot use your favorite email client with Proton.

You can fw their mail wherever you want, but you lose encryption.

Another vice for Proton, they are now my default address. I still have another address for crap mail.

What's the best and easiest way to encrypt a file like Word, Excel, etc? Of course, you'd have to provide the password key to the other end somehow.

File > Info > Protect Document > Encrypt with Password.

Where do you find that? I'm using Windows 11. When I right click on the file in a folder, there is nothing called Info.

Since my original post starting this topic off I was slow in using Proton at first to see how it worked, but it seems to be reasonable and reliable to use. I too have a Yahoo account which is my main one and has more traffic through it than any other.
My service provider for my internet is a company called Plusnet based in Leeds, England. I have been with them since around 2004/5 and the big plus point with them is if you call them with a problem or asking advice you get a human with whom you can talk. (They are also part of British Telecom.) Unfortunately they are to discontinue their own webmail in the near future which promoted the search for a new E mail provider.
The alternative was my Hotmail account and I have already described what I think of Hotmail and Microsoft but since diverting my E mails to Proton I have not received any on the Hotmail account so it is now disused/deleted. I also used to get a lot of Phishing E Mail on Hotmail so that has gone as well.

You may be interested in yahoo.com

Yahoo is/was my main E mail but now they have started including unwanted adverts in the guise of E mails. The last few I have seen invite you to click on the tab to get a version of and antivirus I would never ever touch. The last one goes a step further and suggests there has been an error in processing my card and I should 'click here' to sort it out.

This is one step too far and they have been reported to the Advertising Standards Authority

Tutanota with a subscription gets you 5 email alias addresses.

Reserve one for your banking and other critical transactions and NEVER use it to register on any other site.
Designate four "throw away" addresses for everything else. These are linked to your main account. they arrive in the same inbox, you can reply to them as normal and you can use any email client of choice. (Just don't do something bone-headed like use Google, Apple Mail or Yahoo as your mail app or THEY will do the associations and defeat your entire plan!)

When one address becomes spam-laden or compromised in any fashion, kill it and make a new address.

Keeps trackers from associating your real address with your spending habits and your "social media" activity.

I found Proton does not play nice with Linux, but Tutanota does.

I also use a subscription password manager that suggests complex passwords for logins, auto fills logins and assures I do not have identical passwords on any sites. It will also warn me of any compromised email addresses in the "dark web".

I use ad blockers on each of my email accounts.
