I just received a polaroid SprintScan 120 scanner. Along with it came PolaDSR scratch and dust removal software. It's a software only solution. I tried it on a couple of black and white negatives and images, and it works pretty well.

I don't think it is sold anymore, but I understand it can be found on the internet for download. I encourage everyone to give it a try, especially for your conventional black and white scans, and/or if your scanner doesn't have infrared scratch and dust removal capability. It's not perfect, but it seems to find most of the defects without targeting much of the legitimate detail. It may save you hours of work trying to doing dust and scratch removal in Photosho, since this software will do most of that for you.

I found that you have to be careful in how strongly you apply it as it will result in donut shaped artefacts, particularly in areas of backlit foliage and other areas of small details with high contrast.

You can mask off areas of the frame that you don't want to cleanup. Best used for areas of consistent tone such as the sky etc.

Just experiment with the slider controls and make notes as you go until you get results that you are happy with. The spot healing and clone stamp tools in Photoshop and similar editing programs will give better results but can be very time consuming.

Interesting. I found it not worth the trouble. Too many false positives or ineffective (depending on the used settings). But I only tried it on colour scans.

Just ran it again on a random picture. With certain settings it would finally pick up the dust, but then it would also include many false positives. A crop from a scan:

You can manually erase the areas with false positives, but then you basically need to check your entire image for problem areas and consequently you're not saving much time over manual dust&scratch removal in PS.

I agree. At the end of the day my approach in PS is to setup a grid on the image and view at 'Actual pixel' level then work my way from top left corner to bottom right corner of the image manually cleaning the defects. Not unknown to spend 30 mins plus on old, dusty images. (I'm a lot more careful with drying and storing of negatives now :whistling:). I tend to reserve use of PolaDSR to very old negs, 30+ yo, that are otherwise basket cases - these are generally negs that I didn't wet print at the time due to cost / time constraints and I am now curious about their contents. After all, who ever printed a full roll of film at 10 x 8 inches back in the day?

As far as I remember, you only need to remove the screws at the bottom. The cover can then slide off. It should be evident enough when you have scanner in front of you...
