I just received a polaroid SprintScan 120 scanner. Along with it came PolaDSR scratch and dust removal software. It's a software only solution. I tried it on a couple of black and white negatives and images, and it works pretty well.
I don't think it is sold anymore, but I understand it can be found on the internet for download. I encourage everyone to give it a try, especially for your conventional black and white scans, and/or if your scanner doesn't have infrared scratch and dust removal capability. It's not perfect, but it seems to find most of the defects without targeting much of the legitimate detail. It may save you hours of work trying to doing dust and scratch removal in Photosho, since this software will do most of that for you.

). I tend to reserve use of PolaDSR to very old negs, 30+ yo, that are otherwise basket cases - these are generally negs that I didn't wet print at the time due to cost / time constraints and I am now curious about their contents. After all, who ever printed a full roll of film at 10 x 8 inches back in the day?
