Hi everybody... just bought my very first enlarger... so apologies for the newbie question..

My m601 doesn’t have the little negative carrier masks that keep the neg flat but came with the carrier itself (sivoneg) I was wondering if the sixneg carrier will fit the 601 because I have just seen one on eBay with masks etc for a good price ...

Thanks in advance, keen to get this going... I’m in NZ ... these things are hard to source and expensive to ship

Cheers,

Nick

It is very possible that I am being very dumb... yes the orange slide things are there.. but there is no glass and no way for my neg to stay flat.. unless I’m missing something ... out and about atm but will post a pic later.., thanks for your reply

ahh i get it, you are missing the glass for the carrier? i thought your carrier was missing the cropping device.
maybe a glass place can cut and bevel 2 pieces of 6x6 glass for you? you would need to bring the carrie
to them to measure and see how it has to fit.. i bought mine from a durst dealer years ago and it cost a small fortune...

You can use glass inserts or the metal frame inserts. The Sixneg holder won't fit an M601 but it looks like the masks/Glass are the same size.

I use glass on the bottom and the masks on the top with my M605 (same size neg carrier - I also have an M601). I've made glass inserts from 1.5mm glass in the past and also a 35mm insert from Aluminium sheet.

Thanks so much... that’s answered my question perfectly ... glass plus an insert I think is how I’m going to go ...

Many thanks

When you buy the glass examine it carefully looking for any defect and then make in your darkroom an experiment: expose for zone V under the light with the enlarger focused at film plane but without film one sheet of paper using your highest contrast paper/ filter and see if is there any texture on your print. I sometime found in my prints uneven sky and it took lots of troubles and work to figure out that my negative carrier glass was replaced at some point with a generic glass and that was the matter of uneven sky in my prints.
