Dry mounting FB paper

I have an ancient Seal Junior 60 dry mounting press with an unknown temperature setting that I want to use with FB paper.

Will the current low temp drymounting tissues work with this press?

Any thoughts.

I have a larger, ancient Seal press and it works fine. I needed to creep up on the right temperature since I did not believe the setting. If it does not have a thermostat and you already have it, you might be able to do something similar by adding layers of mount board between the platens and the print. Worth a try if you already have the press.

Stick a thermometer in to see how hot it actually gets -- I tried a quick Google search, but did not find any info.

My guess is that the MT-5 type of tissue will work fine with it. If you want to use the new lower temp tissue (175 degree) you might have to make some adjustments. If it is too hot, it might be possible to stick a rheostat (sp?) on the power cord and reduce the temp by reducing the power? This may not work...it depends on how it regulates its own temperature.

I'm not familiar with this tissue. What is the difference between this and the low temp tissue?

Can you adjust the temperature of the press?

If so you can get some temperature calibration strips to properly adjust the press temperature.

I just stick the probe of a meat thermometer in my old Seal - between the pad and a sheet of mount board. I have no gauge, but do have a temperature adjustment - I adjust the temperature, allowing it to warm up for at least 30 minutes, then shut down the press to allow it to cool, then warm it up again and readjust. A couple of cycles got mine nailed at 180, which works fine with modern tissue.

It was the Seal (maker of the mount presses) mounting tissue for fibre prints -- recommended for use from about 190 to 225 degrees F. Seal/Bienfang makes a Colormount tissue for fiber and RC prints that works at 185 to 200 degrees F.

Bienfang also makes an archival (buffered) low temp tissue. I do not know the temp for that, but it might be the same or similar as the Arista mount tissue from Freestyle...it is a reversable tissue. Adheres at 175 to 185 degrees F and releases again at 190 degrees F.

I use to have little slips of paper for testing one's mount press. They each had a series of colored wax -- each color melted at a specific temperature. They were made by Seal and one put them scattered about between the platens to check for even temperature across the platens.
