in summer I use mostly a mobile phone app for exif notes (aperture, shutter speed, etc) but I always have also small spiral notepad and a pen as a backup. For night/long exposure, as well as for development times, I use often an old Blackberry Classic phone with a battery that holds a whole day, it has a very nice stopwatch app.

It's full moon and early today I went out to take pictures with the last hour of night and first dark blue of the morning,
But in the hurry I took in the bag a regular ink pencil and the Blackberry, instead of a graphite pencil and an old mechanical stopwatch. From around 20°c. and more, ink pens do freeze, so after one roll of 120 I couldn't any more write down aperture/speed in the notepad  and the phone went down so I couldn't measure exposure accurately, was counting seconds mentally….

so, don't forget the "analog" pen and stopwatch for the analog workflow

Check out Rite in the Rain. They have little pads with paper that you can write on when it's wet. Also, they have pens that write then as well including upside down as they're pressurized.

I always have my analog stopwatch with me. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi...I usually forget to write things down anyway, or am working too fast to do so.

I've used pens where the ambient temperature has been under 20°C, and they've never froze. 20°C is considered room temperature in Canada.

... and a pencil sharpener.

:D yes. I got that covered, I have always in the bag a small multitools with two kinds of screwdriver tips, and a very short blade used for cutting the nasty paper ribbon around 120 rolls, whatever else and also sharpen pencils..
Other stuff always in the bag: magic tape, electrical tape, rubber tape....

But perhaps not at - 20 degrees C which is what antonio_ b had

pentaxuser

yes of course, we are in winter and most pens have a water based ink ...

I wanted to see how it goes with Retropan-320 at night. I have used it a lot, have a bunch in the fridge, find it interesting, have shot at manufacturers ISO, 320 and 640 but also at 800, 1250, 1600, 2500, and developed with Retro Foma dev, HC-110, Atomal-49 but I hadn't yet tried at night. Foma's doc gives a huge Schwarzschild effect: 6x for 10s, 8x for 100s !
So i took the Moskva-5 which is sharp from f8 and went around the corner.

Obviously with these night shots I wanted to see the tonal distribution, since it stretches from very dark to snow grays and whites.

for this one the phone (stopwatch) had shot down, the meter gave f8/8s so 48s with reciprocity. Sky was clearing to deep blue with a bit of snow fog, full moon, but this shot is terribly wrong, certainly some movement (light carbon tripod no the best for stability).

interesting, thanks for the link. Curious about that "waterproof" paper... I will order some see what it is.
I use their 3.5" x 7" notebooks (for Level, not Transit...just a different line pattern). The waterproof paper is designed for pencils.

I use mechanical pencils loaded with extra leads -- no sharpening needed.

I do not have those problems because I never bother to take notes.

I use my wrist watch as a stopwatch if my phone has quit -- internal lithium battery good for ten years, and it stays warmer than ambient on my wrist. I'll get a year or so warning when the battery starts to run down...

I'm terrible on keeping exposure notes, though. I need to improve on that. Graphite pencil, yes; I carry one any time I'm out on weekends (and don't do any serious photography on weekdays due to work and commute).
