Unfortunately the eBay jacket is too small for me, a pity since the price isn't that different from when it was new. And the Hill and Dale jacket is discontinued. Sigh.

This decent-looking jacket with lots of pockets and removable sleeves was discontinued a couple of years ago. To my eye it's more subtle and less goofy-looking than the common photo vest. Is there a similar product out there now?

This is what it looked like:

In Belgium for instance you could meanwhile get into police trouble wearing such vest, and might face a horrendous bill for the police effort.
Yes, life has become strange.

No sleeves and looks like only mediums available but how about:

Might be the cheapest thing Billingham do!

<edit> or you could look like the neighbourhood swat team: Dead Link Removed bandit:

hunting and fishing jackets n vests have abundant pockets and are much cheaper.

Yeah...i was going to suggest Cabelas, and a Hunting/Fishing jacket.
Do you carry a lot of stuff on you Vs. in a back-pack or bag.?
We all find our own level, but i would hate to have to wear the stuff that i carry in my back-pack.
Do you change a lot of things...filters, cables, flashes.?
I am just a beginner, so i am kind of in awe of the Jacket/Vest scenario. :smile:

All I want is:
1) sleeveless;
2) breathable;
3) two "normal" side pockets;
4) an inside pocket on the right side (I am left handed);
5) shoulders that straps don't easily slip off; and
6) a medium tone/colour.

Any suggestions

Steve, I have a Willis & Geiger safari jacket I picked up 20 years ago and it is still going strong. One of the best things I have ever bought in my life, no kidding. I think I paid close to two bills when I bought it and I wouldn't sell it for five times that price. I think they went out of business though. Still, if you can find one I bet it will run circles around the Domke. The fabric is a really tightly woven cotton that is waterproof. I was skeptical about that claim, but it turned out to be true, many times over. This looks to be similar to the one that I have- http://www.ebay.com/itm//272373146211
It just keeps looking better with age as well. It is also very comfortable.

If you are looking for a regular photo vest, try to find one of the old Fuji vests they gave out to pros. The one I have is really nice, but I am not much of a photo vest kind of guy. Look for the one with the itty bitty white tag.

Hope that helps you!

Bear Grylls should have something like this up his sleeves... :pinch:

Thanks for the tip on Cabelas. The "Safari Jacket" might be just what I'm looking for. I'll take a couple of film holders (4x5, 5x7) to my "local" store in a couple of weeks and check it out.

I've been intrigued by these builders' vests made by Occidental Leather. They have various versions, here is one example;

Several years ago I bought a fisherman's vest at Walmart for $14.95. Not quite in the same league as a photography vest, but it gets the job done.

I don't think I like the pockets on that one. I'd be worried that my lens filters and various small accessory items would come tumbling out of them every time I bent over.

Yes, life has become strange.

In Germany a main station has been closed and police with submachineguns forcefully arrested a guy wearing a vest quite similar to such photo-vest, just for wearing it.
The vest turned out harmless.

These are great for photojournalists and are tools of their trade, but for us ordinary civilians I would feel an idiot wearing one of these and I gave up wearing assault vests when I left the military many years ago.
I can understand these days why they make the police nervous the user could be carrying guns, loaded magazines grenades, gas masks etc, or be a suicide vest.

Jesus Christ. We've gone off the rails as a society.

Ain't that the truth, but just about everybody these days in the public perception is either a potential terrorist,or child molester or worst which is why when I'm out with my camera I avoid children like the plague.
