Do you use a footswitch with your enlarger?

You mean you know that your old airbags worked. Once deployed, they have to be replaced. I hope you never have to find out if your your new airbags work.

Once deployed, the car needed to be replaced. So did the other car.

Did that result in better prints, or make it easier to make good prints? I'm an old Time-O-Lite user too. For B&W, my single exposures w/ the budget timer have worked pretty well.

In my case, yes, it did. Being able to have my dodging tool or, sometimes, both hands in place, not having to reach for the timer with the other hand; having two hands free for burning, were very helpful. I should add that my adoption of Fred Picker's mulitple-short-exposure technique makes the footswitch even more valuable. Others will have their own approaches and preferences; I am happy with the improvement in efficiency and ease that the footswitch offers.

I use my foot switch probably 50% of the time. When I first read this thread I remembered I had an extra footswitch that I never used or tested. Its took me this long to remember to test it. Well, it doesn't work. Don't know what the problem is. A piece of heavy cord has been sliced into it, maybe the problem rests there. If someone wants this footswitch and be willing to pay shipping, they are welcome to it. It fits the Chromegatrol, it has a 4 prong plug that connects to the power box. Its not very beautiful, . If someone wants a picture I could do that.

Some timers offer it as an option; I know some photographers who have been able to rig their own, DIY. It's convenient though not as necessary for those who use a single long exposure rather than a cumulative exposure from a number of shorter exposures, e.g., 3 seconds times 8.


After decades of using a enlarging Time-O-Lite, I got the Zone VI-provided footswitch (apparently called momentary, requiring just a tap to start the timing) when I bought the compensating timer. Recently, I had to sort through some specifications, re: type of connector, wires needed, open or closed, for the friend who is building the LED head for my D2.

I'm curious how others work in this respect.

No, because I would trip over it. I use a manual switch on a mechanical timer, but I pick the whole unit up before pressing the button, to avoid any vibration transferring to the enlarger. Previously used a darkroom next to a busy road. Vibration matters.

When you get your iPhone 14 how will you test the car crash detection?

I know someone with the iPhone 14, and it senses a crash even when the vehicle has not been in a collision, and it automatically calls for help!
I recently learned that my friend has had to call to cancel the emergency call after the automated call went out, on more than one occasion! Apple should have programmed the feature to first say, "We have detected a crash...Do you want us to call for help?"...and call only after getting no response from the occupant!
