Fact: Composition is critical to achieving good landscape (and other) images.

Composition is the key to everything along with exposure. If the composition is good, a good print can be brought out of almost any photograph. If the composition is not good, no amount of darkroom work will save it. My parents dragged me through art galleries in the Baltimore and Washington DC area regularly. Add to that an art history course [an easy A, but that is a story for another time]. Plus reading about composition, vision, and perception. It all builds a good sense of composition.

why are all you photographers so self deprecating? what makes you think that painters don't look at photographers work to help them with subject selection and composition?

Are you all numpties that hold photography in lesser regard than painting..

it has nothing t do with lesser regard or being self deprecating ..
but the fact that painting has existed for 1000s of years, sculpture
too and things humans have built. plenty of things that are,
and aren't photographic to look at and
see how it's done.
great to see your photographs showed boring painters how to see.
I've had work published in a newspaper when I worked for one as staff ..
a cityscape from a place no one photographed from, that the paper
sold to the city
( and of course gave me no credit by-line ...grrrr! )
was on billboards, busses and shelters for a long time ...
and now everyone and her brother makes photographs from the
same vista.
it is unfortunate people are so bland they can't figure things out for themselves ...
