Do you like Ilford?

I believe that is the result of the new machine bought from Agfa.

I wondered, in another thread, whether they can infact now substitute the lettering for anything they like at the tap of a keyboard......like "you underexposed, again"

it would be cool to purchase film with customized lettering.

Yep. Ilford are "good people" as far as i'm concerned. I use their chemistry more than their film but i do love Delta 400.

Hey - eveyone in the US having to suffer the higher cost of Ilford.......Over the past 4-5 weeks the Dollar has strengthened. It had been sitting at $2 - £1, or close to this, for some time, which is the weakest the $ has been since about 1981.

A sustained weaker £ may eventually translate into cheaper Ilford in the US.

Last time I looked at B&H, Hp5+ was $3.50 and TriX $3.99. Delta 100 was $3.50 or $3.99 and FP4+ about the same. The only brand consistently cheaper was Fuji, with acros and neopan 400 at $2.95.

Developer is a different matter.

Delta 100 IMO is in a league of its own with FAR greater acutance than Tmax100. Less fine grain, but the perceived resolution is far greater IMO with the ilford material. Hp5+ is a great film unless shot under very flat light (superb under contrasty light when pulled) and FP4+ a reliable all rounder. I think their films are great, although I currently use Neopan 400 and TriX more often. There is no Kodak/Fuji replacement for Delta 100 though. Neither Acros nor Tmax 100 have the same bite.

I am experimenting with the 3200. Very encouraging in 120...

Pan F is pretty unique. How many panchromatic films of this speed are there? Nothing is as creamy as Pan F and it is wonderful for shots of children and other subjects where one does not want to emphasise acutance. Sharpens up very nicely in acutance devs though.

DDX is a very convenient speed increasing dev which perhaps has no real competition. Offers a solid 1/3+ stop more speed than Xtol and 2/3-1 stop over D76.

My only gripe is MGIV, which looks great wet but lifeless dry. IMO Kentmere fineprint is so much better only it is lower in contrast and has odd grade spacing.

So yes, I do like Ilford. A lot and i feel they deserve support for standing up as the bastion of B&W photography. I have not used MG WT since they made the base whiter, but look forward to trying some soon. I far preferred the overall image characteristics compared to MGIV but hated the base colour.

Ilford products are high in quality and very consistent.
For nearly all my photography I use HP5+ developed in ID 11 and printed on Ilford Warmtone fibre, developed in Harman warmtone developer, fixed in Ilford fixer and toned in Harman selenium toner.
At the end of the day I can always see things wrong with my prints, but the faults are always my own, not Ilford's.

Did you guys know that Afga released a chromogenic B&W at the same time as XP1? But it was gone almost as fast as it came out. Wonder why.

I started with Ilford FP4 printing on Ilfomar, I am now using HPF and am printing on Ilford Warmtone.
In 35 years I have never had a defective product to be returned and the quality of their product allows me to make a living as a photographic printer.
So I like Ilford now Harmon.

XP2 was what started me into B&W, and now I have MF gear, Delta, and HP5 are weapons of choice.

Good quality kit, and available pretty much anywhere on the High street in the UK.

That being said, I happily recommend ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology Limited.

I'm using their papers, and their fixer too.

I expect that they make a substantial financial contribution to APUG, and I know that Simon Galley has made great contributions to the content here.

By the way, where are Simon's contributions to this thread .

With fall and winter arriving here in England adn the day dimming considerably, I headed down to the local store to pick up some Delta3200.

To my great surprise it has hit 6 GBP per roll (135).

Ouch!

I love the stuff, but at the rate that I burn through it, I would be bankrupt in a short time. Has anyone else noticed this, or has my 'dealer' just gotten a little overzealous?

It's currently $7.99 US at the shop just down the street for 36 exp 35 mm Delta 3200.

I don't think the U.S. dollar is all that strong against the GBP these days.

Harry 7 Day shop have it for about £3 for a 35mm roll. Retro photographic have it at £37 for 10 rolls.
I love Delta 3200 in 120-there IS nothing like it!

Well you asked for it...my contribution : Of course I like ILFORD Photo...apart from my family.. its been the most important thing in my life for 21 years...I love to go to work... how many people are that fortuanate in their working lives...not many I guess. I love the passion, I love the products, I love the brand and what it stands for, I love being part of a company that actually 'makes' things, a manufacturer who exports 90.00% of the goods it makes, as so many UK companies did..in the past. Yes.

I often use slow films, and when Efke films started to curl I tried Ilford Pan F+, which since then became one of my standard films. The grain is just as fine as Efke 25, but the over all quality is better.

I also use Ilford fix and paper.

Hey Simon, I just bought 200 sheets of 8x10 RC paper. I bought pearl and satin. Whats the difference between those finishes? Also, does ILFORD have a developer that is the same as T-max?

I also bought a bottle of multigrade dev, but I still have a older bottle. Would a opened bottle with a lot #25D005S be expired?

It also seems paper has gone up $10-12 per 100sheet RC.

I know! When I shoot at night with my Holga, I have to move under a street lamp, or bring a flashlight. Maybe a thicker, more digital[like the ones on a microwave or stove]

I found the answer on page 15 of that back-and-forth. I wasn't doing much photography at all then and I didn't know it was such a shake-up when Ilford "came back."

It appears that their printing process will not allow them to make the numbers any darker without it punching through... or maybe they're worried about the number getting burned in through the paper on the back. I am not entirely sure. What I do know is that I have a heck of a time seeing those numbers on my old folder. I wonder if playing with the color of the ink would change things.

Anyway, I love the FP4+ I have been using.

LOL I was too lazy to find the exact post. That thread rocked APUG when it happened.

I've had problems with the red window myself, i often wondered if changing the window with a lighter red or orange, and covering when not winding would be ok.
